Is there any word yet on how many students they are accepting this year?

Didn't they over accept last year? I heard they were offering one-year scholarships to anyone willing to defer a year.

I've heard similar, either they over accepted or more people took them up on their acceptances then they expected. Either way a costly mistake I think. I have a feeling that will make OSU much more selective this year, I almost didnt apply there just for this reason.

One year scholarships for medical school for 17 people is still a lot for them to pay (if that is indeed true). Spending money tends to make people remember things better, especially departments in academia.

ya but why would they be any more selective than the year before? They made the mistake of calling people off waitlists before people's accepting lettings came in, but how does that make them any more selective this year? still 200 or so spots to fill.

Oh, I didn't suggest them being more selective this for the sake of last year's oversight. They will still admit the same amount, but no doubt be a bit more prudent in dialing up those on the wait-list prematurely.

Deferring costs a student $250,000+ in future income. An unfortunate mistake, but I'm sure the 17 are grateful to have been accepted.

Actually it was a combo of both. They sent out too many acceptances (termed an "accounting error" by our dean of admissions) but also there was about 10% higher acceptance rate, leading to the class of about 265. Next years class (and the class after that) will be 185 members minus the 17 who deferred, (so 168 new members). So yes it will be more competitive to be sure.

Also, to address what I said earlier, the dean said it never fails that the best applicants are always the first to turn in applications, and the average applicants tend to be later. Like I said, a generalization, but still based in reality. Don't change your interview day to later for no reason, I was just saying that interviewing in November/December is NOT a death sentence like some make it out to be.

Haha depends on what they do, +/- 100k, they probably took it cause they were planning on deferring anyway

Clarification: they didn't accept anyone on the waitlist last year - those were all initial acceptances.

Actually, I'm not sure that math is exact. With the interest you save from not taking out an extra $50,000 in loans, in addition to the money you could make working that entire year, you probably won't be losing as much as you'd think. Though, you may very well make more your first year as a doctor. But the emotional benefits of having a year off between undergrad and medical school (if that's your scenario), all the while knowing your accepted (oh, and you don't have to worry about paying for your first year) is near priceless. It'd be tempting for me. I'm so sick of school.

Truth. A year off wouldn't necessarily be the worst thing in the world if it came with the peace of mind of knowing you got a spot the next year.

They extended interviews by a month last cycle.. I had my interview in early april, which is odd for OSU. I also got accepted and never put on the waitlist, I bet they won't be doing any interviews that late this year.

Good luck to everyone who is interviewing next week, relax and be yourself!

I'd be curious to know if they send out rejections after they finish interviewing (say March to April), or if they send them out before then.

I've been complete for about a month, but this was a reach for me. In state.

As previous years, they definitely reject before they finish interviewing

So uh... anyone with an interview hear back about student hosting yet?

I have one on the 14th (next Wednesday) and I haven't gotten anything besides an email asking for more info, and that was a week ago....

Hi all, I have a huge query and this could mean a lot to me. Could experienced students comment on this?

I am an undergrad, right here at OSU. I am being considered Instate for the UG education. I also graduated from a Ohio High school. I dont consider myself dependent on my parents for fees because I receive 100% loans, scholarships and grants. I pay Ohio taxes and my parents dont live in Ohio anymore.

Nevertheless, they are considering me an OOS. When I talked to them, they said this is because they think that I am dependent on my parents.
At the time of my AMCAS submission, my parents were living in Ohio.

Considering all this, will I be adjudged Instate only for admissions purposes? My AMCAS shows that I am a resident of Franklin county for past 3 years.
Thank you!

Hey folks,

I'm one of the 17 who got accepted and took OSU's generous deferment offer. Not only are they paying for my 1st year of med school, they're also paying my tuition for the MPH I'm doing this year. It was a pretty sweet deal since I was going to do the MD/MPH program anyway.

I just wanted to wish everyone good luck, and I can't wait to meet my future classmates next fall!

Good question. If anyone knows the answer, I would like to know myself as I will be rolling through Columbus on my way to Boonshoft.

Default OSU Med School Academic calendar/schedule

Would one of the current M1's or M2's be able to provide a link to the current 2011-2012 Med School Academic schedule? I saw one but do not see the link anymore. It included all the dates, vacations, and test dates. Looking for the M1 and M2 schedule.
Thank you.

Had the interview today. This was my 4th. Amazing environment, absolutely positive attitude from everyone, just like Michigan. Very positive experience. Also met Dr Capers.

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered a similar situation:

I submitted my secondary on 8/20, and got an email today saying my status had been updated. I got all excited, but the status update is this:

"We received information from the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that you have applied to the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University.

If you submitted the secondary application, you will see that it is listed as "received" on your status page.

If you have not submitted the secondary application, go to https://www.applyweb.com/apply/osumed/ where you will create an account and pay the $80 application fee on line.

Be sure to visit the Admissions web site at: http://www.medicine.osu.edu/futurestudents/admissions to view our admission requirements for completing your application file.

We look forward to reviewing your application materials."

They should have gotten my verified AMCAS on August 1st.

Do you all think this might be a mistake?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure this is normal...as long as it says Received next to whether your secondary was submitted or not, you are fine. It's really irrelevant when they got your AMCAS; they only care about when you submit your secondary.

Med 1 here. They are totally changing the curriculum for next year. I don't believe a schedule has been posted for the upcoming year. I could give you the 2011-2012 m1 and m2 schedules but I don't think they mean much for the class of 2016.
