Can someone explain to me what would be the reason in a job posting to not disclose the identity of the group/practice? Is it as simple as not wanting a deluge of applications or cold calls about the job that they are opening? Does doing this imply anything undesirable or good about the said position?

My guess is that it's a recruiter, and they don't want to be bypassed and miss out on their fee if you sign. I still sporadically get those kinds of emails, having ended up on some recruiter's list somewhere, somehow.

They could be trying to get rid of someone in the group and discreetly searching for a replacement. I have heard of that before.
