2. The financial package is still under review. There will definitely be need-blind financial aid given to everyone, but the amount is still being discussed (as of early september this info was accurate).
I take it this is incentive scholarships to attract students?

Snow in NYC starts in December, but yes, it probably will be chilly. It really depends on the year though

ellifino. Hofstra more than any other school has confused me the most. I don't even know until what date they are interviewing applicants.

Portal message changed from please wait 6-8 weeks to "please be aware that you could remain in the review process through February. "

I would liek to point out that the first post showign the secondary questions has a mistake... the second question is applicable only to ppl who are NOT enrolled. this is the copied paste from Hofstra sec app.

"If you are currently not enrolled as a student, please indicate what you will be doing from the time you complete this application to the start of medical school."

thought i'd point that out in case some ppl just blindly copy paste into the app.

Just got an interview...for 1/20...that's pretty late in the cycle but I hear Hofstra waits a lot later than others, in other words its not really "rolling"

Anyways stats: 3.7/3.74, 32 MCAT and complete probably 9/5..around early september so took around a month

Just curious if anyone sent an "in the area" e-mail and if they got a response. I sent one about 2 weeks ago and never received any sort of acknowledgment (didn't expect it to work, but at least expected some sort of reply).

Congrats! WOW! Its already pretty much booked through January! Starting to lose hope with Hofstra. What else to expect when their inaugural class had an average 33 MCAT .

Hey thanks man...yeah I guess they must interview a ton of people. I hope interviewing late isn't a disadvantage in any way...I wouldn't lose hope though I think they interview all the way through February so there's still a whole month of interviews they will be filling up

Also, it's still October and their application deadline is December. They can't run out of interview spots before then. That would make the deadline totally arbitrary.

No it would not make the deadline arbitrary. It's called ROLLING admissions. Med schools sometimes fill their class very early.

Rolling admissions, right. Have you looked at last years thread? This school's admissions process is nuts.

For those of you from the area/have gone on an interview/will go on an interview: What airport do you recommend flying in to?? LaGuardia or JFK? On the Forum I have seen JFK, but is also convenient to fly into?

Thank you!LaGuardia

JFK would probably be better because you can take the LIRR from there to Jamaica station. From Jamaica you can get to anywhere on long island.

La guardia you have to take a bus or cab. Cab definitely better.

Anybody try driving to their interview? I slacked on scheduling an interview because I wanted to figure out when I could get there, but now I have to wait until February. Figured I'd schedule before they ran out of interview spots entirely.

Hey sdners,

So I am having difficulty figuring out how to get to the interview the day of considering it starts at 8AM. I wanted to take the LIRR or a bus but none of them drop off directly on campus... does anyone know if taxis are available at the bus/train stations near Hofstra?? Also the shuttle Hofstra provides from the train stations DO not appear to get you to their school before 8 AM... so I doubt anyone will take them like suggested

What are other methods to get there?

The shuttle (Blue Beetle) will get you there on time. It runs through the night, but it picks up at Mineola after 7pm and before 7am. Call if you're not sure which one.

A cab is also possible. There are generally one or two that hang around the train stations, but if not, there are many many taxi numbers that you can look up.

EDIT: And Hofstra finally sent my invite. My possible dates are late January/early February, but I got a call yesterday saying that there are extra spots earlier and to call to set one up.

Yay - Hofstra now too! I guess that shouldn't be too far of a trip for the interview

I heard Hofstra was going to be ranked top 10 in research due to the Feinstein Institute and primary care, too, because of their EMT and clinical curriculum. This looks like a pretty sweet place, I hope I get in!!!!!!!~!!!~ It seems so interesting to have no lectures.
I heard they're interviewing a lot of people. Is it still 60 people for the class???

I'll believe it when I see it.

Or it will be just another example of how USNews Ranking cannot be taken seriously. There's no way a new school like Hofstra can beat Emory/UVA/Case/pick your school.

I have a question.

I understand that students love it here and are willing to greet new students. Obviously, they get along with each other. However, is there fierce competition among students?

I may be completely wrong, but it seems like the faculty and staff are very competitive and are trying to claw their way to the top, which may rub off or indirectly or informally put pressure onto students to compete fiercely too. The reason why I say this? Hofstra was criticizing Mt. Sinai. This is what Dr. David Battinelli, senior associate dean for education at Hofstra University School of Medicine said this about Mt. Sinai's students in the HuMed program:

“You have to have the proper amount of moral courage to say ‘O.K., we’re going to skip over a lot of the huge barriers to a lot of our students,’ ”

But, Dr. Battinelli added, “Now let’s see how they’re doing 5 and 10 years down the road.”

Hofstra doesn't even have a proven track record or a single medical student to graduate yet, but they are throwing stones at established medical schools.

Now rumors of being the top 10 research institutes are leaking out, which I am sure the marketing department is behind this.

Something doesn't add up. It's a little fishy if you ask me. Anyone else agree, or am I just way off base?

If it is, I think it will be more of a function that Hofstra has just what they are looking for in terms of ranking. Top 10 would be crazy haha

But most likely not indicative of actual performance, not yet, at least.

Hofstra wants to be the big boys on the block, not just on Long Island.

And Quicksilver, I agree with your statement that the school admin are fighting tooth and nail to be considered one of the 'top' schools, or at least a future top. I'm not sure if that has translated to the students, or if it will.

Maybe he's against it because Mt sinai is another big private hospital/medical school in the NYC/LI region. I believe Mt sinai will do well 5-10 yrs down the road, even if their curriculum does get worse. Why? Because the calibur of their students is superb, they'll do well even if there are no classes. They'd do well with just wikipedia alone.

Guys, don't be stupid. That was clearly a joke.
I'm baffled anyone could have taken my FIRST POST with an OUTRAGEOUS HANDLE as anything but waste.
Hofstra's awesome, btw.

YouTube has a video of the dean welcoming the first inaugural class at Hofstra. I'm pretty sure he does mention something to the effect of, "We are going to be the best medical school in the country," whatever that's worth... Good medicsl school? I think it will be. Top ten? I don't think even 20yrs from now.

They are going to increase the class size by 20 each year until they reach 100. But, yeah, still less than 10% of interviewees matriculating, and it will be 12.5% when they do get to max size.
