Got my letter this past weekend while I was away. Looks like I'm an alternate. Considering I was expecting to get rejected, I'll take it.

Anyone know if they have an IS and OOS list or one jumbo list? I don't really expect to get off it, but I was wait listed at a school last year that had two separate lists and would pull people off it according to what type of spot opened up.

Good questions, I was thinking they had separate lists, but who knows? Does anyone know when they may begin calling alternates?

I asked one of the vets that question on interview day and he said that there is an IS list and an OOS list.

Hmm. Well, I guess I'm happy about that, although I still don't expect to make it off it. I just wish I could find out before April 15th. I have to accept my offer from Glasgow by then which is followed by an almost $2000 deposit that I don't want to potentially lose if I get off a wait list in the states. Oh well...

Well, I know I hate hearing this too, but stay positive, OOS list do tend to move faster than IS lists. The DVM teaching my histology course now told me she was #72 back in the day on an OOS reject list and made it off.

When will they start updating? Are they going to wait until after April 15th or are they going to do it as letters come in?

Got my acceptance yesterday! I'm so excited. I honestly wasn't even expecting to get an interview here - so to have an offer for admission is beyond amazing. <3

I interview at my IS school this Friday - if I get in there I'll be declining my seat at UIUC, so don't give up hope, alternates. <3<3

I guess I have a negative outlook on wait lists cause of my experience last year when I was on 4 of them and not one of them moved as far as I know. I ended up pulling myself off of Tufts like late July, which my mom is convinced played a part in my rejection this year, but I'm not so sure since I said I wouldn't financially be able to make the transition at the time, blah blah blah. Doesn't really matter at this point.

And as for when they start letting you know, I think it's usually after April 15th. At least that's what I think recall from last year and what the letter from Oklahoma State said this year. But maybe Illinois does things differently. One can hope!

I think they had mentioned at their little orientation schpiel that they start contacting their alternates as slots open up. I think April 15th is when they stop (or shortly thereafter), because that's when the official decisions need to go in.

Good luck, orca <3

Actually, I know decision wait lister's can be called up, up till the day of school. I know a current student who got called up 3 days before school started last year.

Question: I graduated in May 2010 and finished all of the pre-reqs for U of I, but it still says "pending" for whether or not they expect me to send transcripts for Fall 2011 and After Fall 2011. Does anyone know when that changes? I just want to be sure there isn't some mix up and I don't get in trouble for not sending them transcripts I don't have....

Odd, did you send your Fall 2011 transcripts? I sent in mine and my status does say "received" now (changed from pending).

I think it says that for everyone. I graduated in May 2011 and didn't have any pre-reqs left and mine still says "pending" for anything after Fall 2011. My Fall 2011 says received since I ended up taking a class for somewhere else, but I think you're in the clear.

BB - I sent transcripts over the summer but since I haven't taken any classes since 2010, there's nothing more for me to send them. I honestly expected it to stop saying "pending" after they got my transcript that shows I graduated 2 years ago....
Orca - OK, good to know I'm not the only one!

Thank you both!

Yup, same. Graduated '05, finished prereqs in '07, last of ANY classes were in '09. Hopefully they figured it out

So, do people know where they're living? I've been poking around the "Chambana" craigslist for housing...I can't tell if it's a gold mine or not. I've also checked out some of last year's threads on the topic, but more updated info would be appreciated if anybody's got any!

Also, does anybody know if OOS students routinely pursue residency? I'm getting married in September, and we're thinking if my fiance can find a job and become a resident we can make it happen...

I came to campus over the weekend to check out the housing options. I ended up looking at a couple apartments in Savoy (only 2.5 miles from vet med). They are really nice but also super expensive compared to what I pay now. So I'm hoping to find a roommate or 2. Anyone also looking for a roommate?

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but whatever you do, DO NOT MOVE TO CHAMPAIGN HOUSE. My husband and I lived there and it was terrible. The office workers were nice but seriously unorganized. It took them a week to replace the hot water heater when it broke even though they said it would only be a few. They never plowed or de-iced. We had a blizzard last winter and our car got stuck FIVE TIMES in the parking lot because they didn't bother to plow it out. The police were frequently out there. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

And my understanding is that if you're married to and Illinois resident than you're an Illinois resident, so that should work!

This is my understanding, too. =)

Your fiance would have to get residency status in Illinois first (which involves working as a full-time employee of the state of Illinois for a year, and obtaining Illinois driver's license, which you may have to do as well), so because of the timing you might not be able to declare in-state until 3rd year? But I'm sure there are people in the Admissions office who can answer this question better.

Also - this is just what my dad has told me; he did his master's work at UIUC some years ago, so things may have changed.

Our plan was to find him a job asap, so as long as the year period was before Sept 28th (ish - most of the sources I've found said that's the date you have to apply for residency stuff) of the second year, we could make it happen. I have no guaranteed info, I need to make a call to make sure...maybe I'm thinking it works this way just because I want it to so badly!

Then again, I have no idea if the whole "year of bona fide residency" is necessary for the spouse? Dang, this is complicated. I guess it comes in handy that I'm getting hitched though, haha.

@natalieises: I saw your post on here and see that you're a 2nd year student at Illinois. I was just accepted and have been trying to get in touch with current students. I have been accepted at 2 other schools so was hoping to learn more about Illinois from a current student's perspective and how it is living in the area, etc. Would you be willing to talk to me?

If there are other current students who would be willing to talk with me, please message me! Thanks!

This is still the current one

Also, if anyone is looking for a place to live next year I signed a lease on a 2 bed/2 bath condo in Southwest Champaign, only 2 miles down the road from the vet school. You would get your own bathroom, there is plenty of living space, and it has a fireplace, balcony, and washer and dryer in unit. It's a great quiet neighborhood, with a clubhouse that has a pool and tennis and basketball courts. Free parking, tons of grassy areas, a lake, etc. The rent is $450 plus electricity, internet, and gas (water and garbage disposal included in rent). Let me know if you're interested and we can talk!

On the note of residency - did anyone else here the dean (or associate dean? Some higher up that presented during that lunchtime session) mention that about a THIRD of OOS students obtain residency at some point?

I'm seeing a lot about marrying into IL, haha, but not so much on what it would entail to actually get residency as a single person (the bf is doing his PhD in a different state). Any insight? Someone told me that it's possible to work part time in IL during vet school to get it, but the details of that seem fuzzy...?

Default Computers

Is anyone planning using a mac? I am currently using one for my masters and I am hoping I don't have to make a new purchase during vet school. (I'm pretty computer illiterate ) Thanks!

The Dean said Macs are fine. If you're using it for academia now I imagine you already have the whole Mac Office suit lined up - but if not you'll definitely want that.

There should be a sheet in the info packet they gave you during interviews about their computer requirements - they seem pretty serious about those, but if you have a newer Mac I think you'll be fine.

Also, if you don't have Microsoft Office (and specifically OneNote) I highly recommend it. As a graduate student you get one copy for $10 here:

https://webstore.illinois.edu/home/

You purchase it online, but then go to pick up the installation CDs on the second floor of the University Bookstore.

@hopefulinva thanks! I did get the packet and I believe my computer is up to speed with all of that, except for it said to have "Windows Virtual Machine" which is why I was concerned if I could use a mac or needed to purchase something else? I do have all the Microsoft office, though it's one of the "old" versions, perhaps 2008.

@GreenMouse: what is OneNote? I'm sure I can spare 10 bucks if it will be beneficial for classes

Virtual Machine is a piece of software that runs on your Mac to simulate a Windows environment. It allows you to run Windows software on a Mac. The major negative of a VM is that it is super hard on your computer. It takes a lot of memory, so if you don't have a good computer it will run very slowly.

OneNote is software that allows very good, organized note-taking. I personally love it, but if you have a Mac I'm not sure that you have to have it. I think there is some similar software available for the Mac that won't require you to run a Virtual Machine. It doesn't have all of the ON features, but all of the students in our class that have Macs use it pretty successfully.

I have a Mac. I use GrowlyNotes on it. It is free and it is the closest thing you can get to OneNote. There are a few other programs that other Mac users use to take notes; basically the lectures come in .pdf or .ppt files, .ppt files can be converted to .pdf files and you can use a program called Skim to annotate the .pdf file. There is also Circus Ponies, but I found GrowlyNotes to be the best. What I did was download free trial versions of these programs and play with all of them in my free time over the summer, just to figure out which was easiest for me to use.

The advantage of OneNote and GrowlyNotes over any .pdf annotating program is that you can organize pages/lectures into notebooks for each class/subject.

Hope that helps.

I haven't heard that statistic about 1/3 getting residency. In fact, I've heard it is near impossible. Check out this page: http://www.usp.uillinois.edu/residency/residentreg.cfm
It has all the info about obtaining residency. I called that office and asked a ton of questions, and they were very helpful.

It takes a year for your spouse to become a resident. And Sept. 28th may be when you apply, but the domicile in IL must be 1 year prior to the start of classes. Check out the info on this page if you haven't yet: http://www.usp.uillinois.edu/residency/residentreg.cfm
