Just checked - No mail

However, I'm on the East Coast so maybe that could it be? But tomorrow is the weekend and Monday is Memorial day! I'm tempted to just call to check on my status...

Darce101, you're from Cali right? Surprised it took 3 days to get from Pomona to you.

2012IHOPE - Thanks. I really hope I get in too! Have you heard back/gotten mail?

I'm at work, so I haven't checked my mail and won't for another hour :0( I checked yesterday and nothing. I'm in New Mexico, so if there is something coming I'm not sure how long it will take to get here.

Oh well. Darce hasn't responded but looking from his previous posts, I think he's based in California. Usually it takes 3-4 days to travel from coast to coast, but who knows with USPS.

for next week (Tuesday, Wednesday?)

Best of luck to you!

Congrats!

Mind if I ask where you're located and what the postmarked date on the letter was?

Thanks

I guess they mailed out their letters on the 22nd. Hopefully, for those of us who are not in Cali, we will get our letters soon.

Well, it took them 3 days to get them in-state. And Monday is Memorial day and USPS is closed, so I'd say Tuesday if we're lucky otherwise next Wednesday/Thursday

Sorry if I'm being annoying () but for Allen and Darce (congrats again! So happy for you two ) when you say May 22nd, is that the postmark date stamped by the post office (USPS) on the envelope or is that the date inside the letter written by WesternU.

Thanks

Thank you.

Just speculating as to when (and if) us out-of-states will hear back.

I'll keep this thread posted if I hear anything!

This is the information that was emailed to me back in March:

The SMSPP course has been designed for the student whose prerequisite anatomy course had limited access to the human body or for those that want to have a refreshed understanding of the human body before the academic rigors of dental school start. The program provides a preview of Gross Anatomy and Head & Neck Anatomy. DMD students in the program will also receive an introduction to Biochemistry/Genetics, Microbiology/Immunology and basic patient Palpation Skills. In addition, DMD students will attend a special mini-course which is an Introduction to Dental Terminology, Cariology, Materials, Radiology, Periodontics, Oral Pathology, Anatomy, and Dentition.

The five-week program will be held on campus June 18th - July 20nd, 2012. The cost of the program is $750.00 and this price includes the required textbooks and materials.

I am taking it because it will give me some exposure to cadavers, it will be a good review, it will give me a chance to try their tests and see where I'm at while exposing me to some of the teachers, and, most importantly, it will get me used to the pace of dental school before it counts.

You definitely have me sold. I'm just not sure if I can make it by June 18. I do have experience dissecting cadavers from an anatomy course last year. I'm just hoping its enough.

That's unfortunate. And to think I was excited for 5 o'clock to get home to check the mail. If you didn't get it in Colorado, doubt it'll be here in New Jersey. Tuesday!! x2

We'll never know if they're full or not.

When I called them last week and from this thread, it would appear they are only sending snail mail without a phone call or e-mail. However, it is important to note that the 2 who responded on this thread were both based in California. DrSicem from Colorado and myself from New Jersey (I just checked my mail), we haven't gotten anything yet. This could be either because they are only accepting California residents now, or the letter has gotten to our part of the country yet (it did take them 2 days to get them in-state).

Admissions Counselor. I'm not sure many people (at least I don't) know who actually is on the Admissions Committee.

Darce101 and allenhoang, congrats!

When were your interview dates? I wonder if they're going through earlier month candidates.

I too interviewed back in October. However, again, I am not in-state so that may be.

In regards to Roni, I haven't received the letter yet (obviously) but I'm pretty sure it's by USPS but again, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also, didn't you withdraw from Western?

Allen - Thanks for the supporting words. Hopefully we will all hear back next week with good news!

Let's not lose faith yet! If they sent out more letters there is a very good chance we still would not have received them yet. And since Western is private I don't think they give much (if any) preference to CA residents. Hopefully we will have a nice letter waiting for us in the mail tomorrow

Blue = Correct and agreed

Red = Incorrect, although I do wish. According to previous years, more than 50% (around 60%) of students are California residents.

Yeah right after I posted that I went here: http://prospective.westernu.edu/dentistry/competitive and saw that there were a lot of CA residents

Maybe they're filling up their CA spots first then doing OOS?

Haha, things we tell ourselves to make us feel better. Well, it's the only thing keeping me sane. Hopefully something tomorrow.

The clinic has 76 chairs which is why they admitted 76 last year. This year however, they are only admitting 68 or 69 to leave a couple of chairs open for the specialists.

I don't know that anyone besides the admissions committee knows this for sure, just like we don't know how many people are already accepted or how many people are on the wait list. I pulled out the notes that I took at my interview and I wrote down that they were accepting 72 this year, but I'm sure they could have changed their minds since then too!

It's not that they give preference to CA residents, it's just that more CA residents apply than non-CA residents. Just a numbers game as far as in state vs out of state goes.

Also, just FYI, it's my understanding that they pull people off the waitlist who resemble (as far as numbers, volunteering, etc) the applicant who gave up their seat.

Good luck to everyone!

As this has been discussed before, no one really knows how many seats they have until the stats get published next year. However, I was actually told at my interview (but this was back in October) that they were accepting MORE than the 76 seats that they have. They told us that (I forgot what they said) it will work out even though there are more students than seats.

On that note, I just checked my mail and nothing on this coast.

While it may be true that more CA residents apply than non-CA residents, another thing to keep in mind is that they are more likely to accept CA residents because CA residents are more likely to accept the acceptance than OOS due purely just do distance.

In regards to how they pick people off their waitlist, I have heard that as well. However, just like the number of seats available, no one knows for sure. I know I made a post earlier with the 3 or 4 different possibilities.

1) Completely random
2) Applicant most resembling the one who dropped out
3) "Best" applicant in terms of scores, ECs, LORS, etc

I'm a Western student and I asked some faculty how they chose off the waitlist and that's what I was told.

Thank you for the information.

Since you have more "inside knowledge" so to speak compared to the rest of us, do you know if the class is currently full?

That I don't know - sorry. I looked at the Facebook group though and there are 32ish people that I know for a fact are current Western people. There could be more - I don't know all of the first years. So that leaves 60ish that could be the new class (if all in the FB group are still planning on going to Western). I would imagine that they have tentatively filled the class, but people still have time to change their minds, not submit the next deposit, etc. Everything is fluid until classes actually start in August. Someone in my year got the acceptance call in late July, so don't give up hope!
