Post GPA from two schools and SMPs

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Hi guys, I will be applying to SMPs and I have GPAs from two schools because I transferred.

I had a very significant change in my life prior to my transfer. I haven't taken the MCATs yet, and have extensive research experience (all semesters of college). No clinical or leadership experience. I will not go back to college next semester because of lack of funds, so technically I have graduated.

Since my GPA is sub 3.0, am I doomed for applying to SMPs even? Will they average my two GPAs or only look at the one from the better college?

Could you make recommendations of SMPs for me? Also, is it a pipe dream for me to hope to attend a "top ten" medical school? Thanks for the help.

Everything is averaged

At the most prestigious and recognized programs, they require a 3.0, so that should answer your question. Some programs are okay with lower than 3.0, but I think they have an MCAT minimum. The "post-bacc" forum can help you more on this.

As for top 10 medical school, the answer is yes, it is a pipe dream. I recommend you start making yourself comfortable with the very realistic possibility that you might end up having to go D.O. or Caribbean. This is not to say you can't get into an MD program with a stellar SMP program, but that's just best case scenario.

3.08 with an MCAT above 28 should be fine to apply for SMP programs.

If it would be less expensive for you, you might also consider 1.5-2 years of additional undergrad (postbac) coursework where you earn near straight As. A 3.7+ GPA with either route, plus a strong MCAT score and sterling ECs, may get you where you want to go interms of an MD admission. If the path is not quite that smooth, DO schools remain an option.

Hi Catalystik, thanks for the response and cute pic :]

Will my progress be looked at less favorably if I do only a 1-yr SMP? And of course I will work on the ECs.
