Default Public Service Loan Forgiveness a "Loophole" for Med Graduates

Wow, the tone of this article is pretty depressing for anyone hoping this program will be around for recent med school graduates. Although I have been skeptical for awhile that the government would repeal this before it starts forgiving loans in 2017, now I feel even more strongly that even if the program is still around, doctors will be excluded.

Doubtful the public will have any sympathy about closing this "loophole".

Interesting article. Basically states what we all have known for awhile now. None of us owns a crystal ball to see the future of the PSLF program, so really this is all speculation. Time will tell.

I realize it's just speculation, but I found it interesting because the author is an impartial financial aid expert who singled out that docs may be excluded. Hadn't read that before. I hope I'm wrong, but I just think people should understand that if they are banking on this program (i.e. maxing out loans, paying the minimum) they should have a high risk tolerance.

I wouldn't count on this loan repyament and am fully planning on it being gone.. This will be a political hot topic with essentially no depth, as are most such issues in Washginton.

A countervailing argument? School teachers earn just as much as physicians:

Unless you've taught before it's tough to realize what teachers endure. Those who haven't done so have NO IDEA.

Teachers don't drive Porsches or live in gated communities.

This doesn't sound promising...just out of curiosity - when did the PSLF program start? How long has this been around? I know payments made after Oct 2007 count, but has it been around since then?

Started in 2007, first payouts wouldn't be until 2017.
