Default A must for all counseling graduate students

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
Greetings!

This is a great place to ask questions and get answers for both Clinical SW and also Professional Counseling. I see the same questions asked over and over (and there are great answers here that can be found from searching the archives.)

Another place where those questions can be asked is by subscribing to a listserv. A few years before I entered grad school., I subscribed to the counsgrads list and lurked and listened. It is an unmoderated list, and with the thousands of members, there is no pressure to post and contribute. There isn't an archive, and any and all questions related to counseling are welcome.

Anyone can join, but the list was created for grad students in clinical mental health counseling. There are a fair number of ug on the list and there are also many licensed MHCs on the list who answer questions.
  • How to get an assistantship to pay for tuition
  • Licensure questions
  • State specific requirements
  • Questions about CACREP vs. non-CACREP
  • Working at the VA
  • Where to get a practicum or internship site
  • Opportunities to participate in research studies
  • Supervision
  • Coursework
  • Salaries
  • Job Opportunities
  • Networking
  • and more
COUNSGRADS has been developed to help graduate students from across the country and world communicate with one another. Students can talk about classes, internships, papers, and ideas about the profession. This is a very active listserv with up to 50-75 posts per day. Darcy Haag Granello, a counselor educator at The Ohio State University, is the list owner. Questions regarding the listserv can be sent to her at granello.1@osu.edu.

To sign up for the listserv, send an e-mail to
listserver@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu with the following in the
body of the message:

subscribe COUNSGRADS (first name) (last name)

Example:
subscribe COUNSGRADS janet smith

To unsubscribe to COUNSGRADS, send an e-mail to
listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

in the body of the message, type:
unsubscribe COUNSGRADS

FYI,

Vasa Lisa

Thanks, Vasa Lisa. Very helpful.
One question: can you subscribe in digest form? I can't take on 50-75 new emails a day--but I can do one very long one!
Thanks,
wigflip

Honestly, I use filters and it never hits my inbox, but is filed away. Then if I find myself with some time, I read through the messages, or search for something that interests me. Because it is unmoderated - you definitely don't want the onslaught!

For Digest Version:
To get the digest version of COUNSGRADS, send an e-mail to:

listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

in the body of the message, type:

SET COUNSGRADS MAIL DIGEST

To stop getting the digest version of CONSGRADS, send an email to:

listproc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu

SET COUNSGRADS MAIL NO-DIGESTS

Vasa Lisa, Question about the listserv...since I don't have much experience with listservs...once I'm on it, do I just hit reply to an email in order to post a question? Thanks!

Great question!

So if you want to reply - you can do that - just be sure you notice who you are replying to in the TO: field of your email.

If you want to ask a question (like starting a new thread here) just send an email to:
COUNSGRADS@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu
A few etiquette/netiquette notes about listservs...
With the high volume - no on really likes the "me too!" reply all replies.
If it is a complex thread - trim all the replies below the reply that you are responding to so people who are on digest just get the meat of the conversation and what you added to it.

The list is pretty chill and no one will slam you if you goof.
