Default One-year Masters Program

Hey guys,

I applied to around 10 schools both MD and DO and got rejected at all 10. I never thought I would be in this situation but the more I thought about my stats were pretty average if not low compared to most applicants. I received a 3.48 GPA and a 27R on my MCAT.

So I was thinking of ways to improve my app and thought about applying to the Rush University one year biotechnology program and Rosalind Franklin's biomedical sciences program.

Does anyone know if this will be advantageous to enroll in such a program? Also does anyone know which program is better for someone looking into medical school without a doubt? I do know that Rosalind Franklin grants an automatic interview if you do well in their program; but not so sure about Rush, even though around 90% matriculated into professional or graduate school afterwards.

Thanks!

Did you get any interviews/waitlists?

Your main low point is MCAT, your energy would be better placed studying like crazy for that.

Is 3.48 your sci gpa or overall?

My overall GPA was a 3.48 my sci GPA was a 3.60. And unfortunately, no interviews or wait lists yet I have fantastic extracurriculars from shadowing experience, licensed EMT, and two executive positions on academic organizations, and a few other things

Then you need to find out what is wrong. That's simply unexpected to happen. Don't rush into a one year masters without knowing what happened. You might just need to replace a letter or get a better proof reader, which would be much less hassle and more cost effective.

This. Before you leap into an SMP, call the schools. You'd be surprised how many admissions offices will review your application and suggest ways to improve it for the next cycle. If you call all ten, and all ten give you similar suggestions, you can bet your SMP that's where the problem is.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will definitely call the schools. My only thing is that I believe that my letters are pretty good as my best one came from the department head of the school of biological sciences while the other came from my PI. I also had my essays and personal statement reviewed by the career center at my university as well as the head of the English department. Do you think I could just be off on the content of the statement?

The reason I am kind of rushing into a one year masters has to do with the thought that it gives me something to achieve on my application. Granted I do well, I thought it might give me an edge in knowing faculty at either Rush or Rosalind Franklin Universityand/or administrators.

My gut response is your personal statement is poor. Have the PS readers read it; it may be grammatically correct in all ways, but it may not convey why you want to be a physician. If you want to apply to an SMP do it, but your stats are decent for DO for sure...
