Default pre-optometry experience-- vision care assistant program?

I just found out about this new program being offered at SCCO called 'vision care assistant' program that trains you to be a vision care assistant. Its a year long program and it includes a clinical internship in a private practice setting where you get to work with optometrists. I am looking to apply to REAL optometry school in about a year after taking a year off. Anyone know if this program is legit and if it would provide experience optometry schools seek in admissions? Or do you think it would be a waste of time and not worth a whole year? I have 0 clinical optometry experience at the moment, I just finished my undergrad.
Thanks!
Here's a link of the program: http://www.scco.edu/index.php/admiss...are-assistant/
