Default Question for those who have been accepted into a medical school (DO or MD)

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
I'm currently in my undergrad years where I have aced 9/10 of all the courses I have taken so far. My question is who here has received a C in any given course (whether relating to your degree, prerequisite for med school, etc.) and still received an acceptance into a medical school? And if so, what course was it?

I received an "F" in an engineering math class freshman year (though there were outstanding circumstances) and a "C" in my first semester of organic chemistry and got in. I received 8 interview invites and 5 acceptances.

A "C" isnt going to kill your chances of getting into medical school, period. Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply wrong. Now, a bunch of "C"s is a different matter.

I got a C in my first semester of Organic and a C in my second semester of general chemistry.

Getting into med school is so much more than worrying about one C. Keep your GPA over 3.6, preferably 3.8+ and you can put a check mark beside that part of it. Then comes MCAT, EC's, leadership, service, research, LOR's, PS.... It's just a piece to the puzzle!

Overall GPA is what you need to worry about, not a single C or even a single F. I had two C+'s in Calc II and III, and they were not an issue at all.

Had an F in a math class (high school college credit...grrr still shows up on AMCAS), D+ in Bio 101 (didn't try) and some C's scattered in Calc 3 and Orgo. Still got an MD acceptance and on a couple good schools waitlist, but it was an upward journey and I had to retake bio. Also had to do an SMP

This. Hands down sums up how you should view your grades.

Yes. 1 C+ in modern dance (freshman year), and a C in abnormal psychology (sophomore year).

I got a C in a cell biology class. I had an A going into the final, but the prof made the final completely ridiculous. I explained it on my secondaries as a learning experience. I had many difficult classes that semester, as well as a boatload of EC's. I followed it up with a 4.0 semester. Was only asked about it one out of 6 interviews. 3 acceptances so far, 2 waitlists, still waiting on 1.

They would ask about a bad grade/low GPA in an interview?

How do you explain the situation without coming off as making excuses.
-i just wondering cause my GPA took a hit when a family member become ill. But following quarters my GPA went back up.

I had a C- in 1st semester organic chemistry, C+ second semester. Overall 3.3 GPA, 33 MCAT. I got accepted to a non-state school.

I got a C in microbiology. Absolutely hated that class. A few people I know told me to try and retake the class to show my "commitment to excellence" LOL. Glad I didn't waste my time on that. A C does not matter in the grand scheme of things.

It's completely possible to get into a top 20 med school with a C. Just make sure you keep your other grades up there and do well in your other things, like MCAT and EC's.

I got Cs in quite a few course reqs (intro bio, physics lab, genetics...)

Important thing is to show improvement and you'll be fine.

If these posts aren't easing your concerns, check this out. I got Cs in bio 1, chem 2, and physics 1 and 2. I thought I did pretty well with DO schools so you will be fine. No worries.

I was lucky enough to keep my gpa high by dropping classes after the first sign of a teacher who didn't give a fuc* about how the students did in the class (large state institution in midwest). MCAT was a detriment to my app (stochastic ftw?) but still allowed me to get into a DO school that im extremely happy with

That's quite an impressive list. How did you manage to pull a medical school acceptance with all those C's? Incredibly strong EC's? Super high MCAT?

post bacc (3.95), SMP (4.0), some decent-looking research creds.
