Class Retakes

I'm in an odd spot with an introductory chemistry class. I had originally take Chem 101 and passed with a B+, but a few semesters later I got thrown into Chem 100 and got a D. I got this grade for a few reasons, none of which are any good. My question is, can this grade be ignored since I already took a chemistry? I'm guessing not since I took it after the first class.

My second question is will a Chem 101 class replace this class if I take it again? The Chem 101 would be considered Gen Chem and the 100 class was just an intro. I have to take General Chemistry I again because the school I am now attending requires a lab and my previous chem classes didn't have one.

Will my only chance of ridding myself of that D be to take introductory chem and general chem over again?

I might be wrong about this... but since gen chem I and intro chem are different classes... you'll have to retake the intro chem class to replace the intro chem grade.

That's what I was afraid of. I was just hoping that since Gen Chem is just a small step up it would be similar enough to count. My GPA should still be around the 3.5 range when things are said and done so I might not worry about it.

You could call/email AACOMAS and read them the course descriptions for both classes and see if they think it would be a sufficient retake course. I don't know if they will tell you, some people have had some not great experiences trying this (not exactly sure why...it seems super annoying that you could potentially waste a lot of money on a course that wouldn't count as a retake, and it shouldn't take long for an accomas rep to give you an answer...but it's always worth a try). Also keep in mind that the courses have to have the same amount of credits or higher. If you have no luck for aacomas, I would play it safe and retake the intro course. Can you not just take the lab portion of the gen chem class instead of taking the whole thing over again? That might be something to look into also.

Sooooo many of my retakes aren't going to count via AACOMAS because my undergrad LOVED to separate out the lab as a single credit lab and 3 credit course versus the course being combined as a 4 credit course. I am unable to retake the courses at my undergrad, so nearly all the courses I am taking in a postbacc at CC will have to be averaged.

Such is life.

The school I will be earning my degree from is requiring me to take the whole class over again. Luckily, the Chem 100 course was only three credits and the course I have to take is four because of the lab. So the credits won't be a problem. The only issue I see is that the class I want to use as a retake is the first class in the chemistry sequence for science majors (Chem 111 at my school) and the class I want to replace is the most basic chem you can take (Chem 101 at the school I took it at). The Chem 111 class certainly covers everything that Chem 101 covers and then some, but because of the extra stuff it technically isn't identical.

If I absolutely have to retake it I will. It will be covered by Army Tuition Assistance so I'm not concerned about the money. The thing that worries me is that I've made this decision to go for med school very late in the game and I want to apply next year which leaves me almost a year exactly to cover two years worth of pre requisites. I should be able to knock out everything, but Orgo I and II before my application. I will have no time to take Chem 100 though.

Do you have any experience with this? Since the class I want to use as a retake is a higher level class I would assume that it would be considered sufficient. I don't know why they wouldn't let a harder course replace an easier one, but weirder things happen.
