Default Pattern Folding

For pattern folding, do you assume that everything folds back? Or the shape fold upwards as well?

In the initial shape, you only see the external surface.
So the first folding should always be toward away from you.
The best way to practice for me was to actually draw the shape onto a sheet of paper,
and cut it off so that I could physically fold it with my hands.

Thanks that makes sense. I didn't even think of the shading being on the inside if I fold towards me.
