Default Plans for class of 2012

I went to the senior project poster session today so I got to ask a lot of people what their plans are. Thirty two students are going into residency (I only know of 2 non-matchers so far but I'm sure some won't disclose that they didn't match). I noticed that quite a few are just staying on with their company in retail (some are staying in Tucson and some are going to Phoenix). Some have hospital offers. Of the 95 students in that class, it seems only a handful don't know what they are doing. This made me feel sightly better knowing that there are still enough opportunities out there for us.

So, have you pharmacy students talked to the graduating students? How is the job/residency market treating them?

Class of 105. Around ~50 have retail positions lined up. ~25 into hospital/residency. ~5 nontraditional and the rest-no plans yet! The dean told us that but that's statistics from back in March, it might have changed since then.

We walked for commencement the other day and apparently it is a tradition that they announce what that person is going to be doing after graduation (awesome-way to embarrass those who don't have jobs lined up yet).

Anyway, out of a class of just over 100 I would say about a third are doing residencies with most other people scattering around the country to land a position with a major chain. A few were going with independents. Only a couple of people got hospital jobs right out of school. There were a handful of us (maybe 10) who don't have jobs yet. However, I know of at least a couple of people who made up jobs for the purpose of the graduation ceremony, so its hard to say how many from my class are actually unemployed.

LOL. I have a feeling that they're going to change that part of the commencement awfully soon, as there is sure to be a lot of awkward silence at that part when the 100 new schools start graduating their classes.

Yep, the dean originally said they probably wouldn't announce our jobs because of this...then they did anyway. I felt bad for the people who made up jobs rather than walk across the stage branded as the unemployed (not that I blame them for making something up).

I didn't have a job at graduation back in '08...mostly because I didn't try to get one at that point yet. I was actually one of only like 3 people that didn't have a job title announced. Then like a month later I got off my ass and got one. Really, I wasn't in a rush. Truth is, the real world sucks way more than being in college...

...but my point is, maybe they are still actually weighing options.

Congrats!!! I wonder of the people who got jobs, how many of them were for 30 hours vs 44 hours when I graduated a few years ago.
