I've determined my GPA through the excel spreadsheet for AACOMAS GPA calculation someone posted here. I may have cheated...I took some engineering math classes early in undergrad that I did terrible in, but replaced the grades for those with the short calculus bio majors customarily have to take. Not sure if I could do that... I have done research involving HIV Env proteins during undergrad for a year (800 hrs). I wasn't published. I've volunteered at my local hospital's ER (167 hours), shadowed a GI for several months (200 hours), and participated in a medical camp abroad for a month, working on a child health project (300 hrs). I am involved in other various volunteer projects that have interested me, including habitat restoration and community gardening. I've taught the MCAT for a test prep company for the last 2 years. I've taken the MCAT twice because my original scores expired last year. I earned a 35P the first time. Any thoughts? Should I bother with a SMP, or am I good to go? Are my extracurriculars strong enough? Thanks in advance for the feedback! PS- I've only shadowed MD's so far, but I'm still looking for a DO to shadow. I know a lot of schools prefer a letter from a DO over an MD, but how much of an issue is this in practice? I have met and worked with DO's before, and my cousin's husband is one, but I don't know any well enough to get a letter from just yet... PPS- Here is my score breakdown for my MCAT's Current 13 P 12 V 12 B Previous 11 P 11 V 13 B Last edited by Hodor; 05-16-2012 at 12:02 PM. Reason: Added MCAT score breakdown. |

I know is bumping is frowned upon, but just thought I'd say this is a legit thread! I know my MCAT scores are high and my GPA is low, just like another recent poster. However, I think our situations are different enough for me to reasonably request some input. I want to go to school in NYC, so I was looking at the Touro campus there. According to the info book, DO or MD letters are accepted, but DO letters are highly recommended. Anyone get into TouroCOM with only MD letters? I have my pre-health adviser's composite LOR from my postbacc, plus LOR's from 2 MD's, as well as a personal LOR from my volunteer projects.
Its not too late to apply to BU's SMP program, which I can complete this year while applying to DO schools. I don't know if I should focus on making my AACOMAS application as good as possible or if I should apply to the SMP concurrently. Anyone have experience applying to either of these programs? Hodor hodor hodor.
Hodor. Hodor. Hodor. Sorry, I am a "song of ice and fire" fanboy. If you want to go MD, you are going to need an SMP. Your mcat is great and you have a great upward trend which will help a lot, your gpas are just too low. but if you are interested in DO, you will get in. Your mcat is baller and it definitely makes up for your low gpa for DO schools. apply early and broadly and enjoy getting interviews. your call though.
