Default Schools emphasizing mindfulness & spirituality

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
This search has been difficult. So I'm hoping that SDN community can help!! Please!

I'm looking for a school based on a campus with a strong mindfulness & spirituality/interfaith center. Ideally (but unlikely, sigh...), my dream school would have an option for medical students to do workshops and classes in mindfulness & faith in medicine.

It's hard to gauge the strength of a program, b/c you may go online on a cool website but then when you get on campus, the "center" is like 1 empty room with no full-time staff with events like every other year.

Thank you! Thank you!!!

UMass has the kind of program you're interested in, but it's unclear whether there are any courses covering this content in the medical curriculum and unfortunately UMass isn't very OOS friendly.

Does this kind of thing really need to be associated with the school? Or is something in the city good enough?

If this is the case, California is full of mindfulness and spirituality programs.

Okay, before anyone posts "Loma Linda" again, do we know if they have a mindfulness and spirituality component to their curriculum, or are we just suggesting them because they have a spiritual mission? I couldn't find anything specific on their website.

They do have that, and they also have religious components. Although religion and spirituality are totally different

Loma Linda definitely has a strong faith-based component. I'm not sure how "interfaith" it is though. It seems to me like Loma Linda's philosophy is "Jesus' was or the highway".

Mindfulness integrated in practice and educational curriculum can have a tangible impact on teaching and curriculum. So I'm looking for a school-based or campus-based recognition.

I'm actually looking for a school that is serious in understanding the value of "interfaith". The major faith religions--Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism etc--are all pointing towards the same Truth.

I'm not a Cali resident...so...

Thank you for the responses so far.

Alpert Medical School (Brown Med) has some programs you might find interesting:

Most schools and even many liberal wingnut places often have religious/ faith student groups such as Christian medical and Dental society which you can interact and fellowship with like minded professionals as well as be xposed to local and abroad mission/ service related opportunities to enrich your experience. Best resource is to ask a student from a school you have been accepted/ may want to attend.

In my experience, schools try to avoid touching any religious things unless they have a religious mission.

That said, a number of programs exist for the mindfulness aspect of things. Check out The Healer's Art, and see which schools have it (I believe most do now, but I'm not sure).

Don't want to be a douche but maybe schools done have these centers because there is nothing scientific about religion/spirituality.

You might be interested in Albert Einstein. They were having a faith and medicine lecture series when I interviewed down there. They also have a pretty progressive student mental health program for their med students. I don't know much about it and don't remember the details particularly clearly.

I have several friends at Brown Med who seem to think it's very well balanced perspective-wise, and Brown is great at interdisciplinary stuff in general.

Loma Linda is private, so I don't think the Cali thing matters so much there. However, they are definitely not interfaith.
