Default First Year Med Student -- What all clinical skills are normally taught?

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
For first year medical students, what all do we learn in clinicals? I know the exact details will vary by school, but what are the most common procedures learned for clinicals? Do we begin suturing on models? Do we start with standardized patients? Or is it more hitting the books and little of the clinical skills?

I'm just curious on this as I start in 2 months and have a good outline of the classes that will be taught but am in the dark on all of the different clinical procedures we'll be learning. Looking for just a brief synopsis. Thanks!

You're going to literally be in the dark in about 2 months when you're holed up inside from dawn til dusk studying. Don't worry about it now. Go outside and play.

But so I'm not a total jerk, you're going to learn how to take a BP, neuro exams, abdominal exams, auscultation of heart/lungs etc etc etc and maybe standardized patients depending on the school. Not usually anything more complex than that.

Basic head-to-toe PE stuff (BP, heart and lung auscultation, otoscopic exam, cranial nerve tests, MMSE, MSK tests, etc.), suturing, knot tying, giving injections, drawing blood, starting IVs, and pelvic exams. Plus a year's worth of basic OMM (myofascial release, muscle energy, HVLA, strain-counterstrain, BLT).

About as much as a physician assistant (physical exam and special tests). You'll also be taught to come up with a differential. Don't sweat it now - it'll come in time. Have fun!
