I was hoping I could get some thoughts on taking loan repayment from the Army Guard from some people on this forum. My situation is kind of unique. I did Army ROTC in undergrad on scholarship which payed my tuition, fees, and room and board, so I am almost debt free from undergrad (I did take $6000 out to take the MCAT, apply for school, get supplies and other stuff). I went into the national guard after hearing too many negative things about HPSP and military residencies and their match process, but since I am not taking any other incentives from the Guard while in school, my obligation is ticking right now, and by the time I am finished with residency I will be completely free from my ROTC obligation give-or-take a few months. My plan was to take some loan repayment following residency and the end of my obligation to mitigate the debt since I'll have at least $230000 to pay off once med school is over. I wanted to ask if there's really that much of an advantage to taking the repayment versus paying off the loans the "normal" way, and whether or not people who took the HPLRP would do it again. Thanks. |

Whether HPLRP beats the "normal" way depends on your relationship with the Guard. The big difference is that with HPLRP, you must and will be in deployable status. How big a deal this is really depends on what the op tempo will be like down the road, which no one can say. If you enjoy serving and don't mind the possibility for deploying for 120 days at a time, HPLRP is a no brainier. Combine it with a small amount of your paycheck and your loans will be gone in 6 years time. If you don't like serving and the possibility for deployment is a deal killer, it's not worth it and you'd be better off with IBR/PSLFP or private employer plans. No amount of loan repayment is worth it if the military is a bad fit. |

Thanks for the reply.
I'm definitely inclined to take the HPLR since I would enjoy serving plus I do feel a bit guilty about the fact that I owe pretty much nothing from undergrad. Have a good rest of your summer. |
