As with many other schools that prefer IS students, you will need above avg. stats compared to the IS applicant pool. Can't ask for better clinical training though .

Does anyone know the stats that are average for out of staters? I was looking into applying here.

Hey sr6622, I don't know the avg. for OOS accepted applicants, but if I were applying out of state, I'd have at or preferably higher than the MCAT and at or near the sGPA/cGPA.

With that said, the UMiami "median" stats in the 2011-2012 MSAR for 2009 accepted applicants are: 32 MCAT and 3.7sGPA/3.8cGPA.

The Boca campus was actually Florida Atlantic University. The two schools had an agreement for UM to educate med students there. That agreement ends this year as FAU is now operating the med school on their own and has Preliminary Accreditation status with the LCME.

Just applied to UM! I'm a south Floridian, and this school is only about a 1.5-hour drive away from my family.

Top choice for me as well . I currently live in Miami. It's only a 30-min drive to the school from where I live in Downtown, and the hospital system is only 10 minutes away. I have shadowed doctors at Ryder and Jackson Memorial, and they are simply amazing. They want to teach, the patient population is very diverse, and it's a great opportunity to immerse in a completely different culture. With that said, for those who don't intend to learn Spanish at some point in their life, living in Miami may prove difficult.

Also, to all females who interview out here (Go girl power!), you are free to crash at my studio apt and save some money. I unfortunately don't have a car and get around with the bus (both time frames mentioned are in bus time), but will be more than happy to show you around

I'm applying from OOS with 3.66 cGPA, 3.7 sGPA and 33M (10 12 11). This is my number 2 school. Hopefully they will take pity on me.

Your numbers are perfect for the school, so it's really just the OOS that might give you trouble. They still do interview a decent amount of OOS applicants. GL

"Please provide a description of any activities involving the FINE ARTS (dance, drama, music, art, photography, etc.)"

This is a MEDICAL SCHOOL application right? I guess I'm out since I never did arts & crafts in my life...

Sorry but "fine arts" does not equal "arts and crafts." As someone who has spent years of my life perfecting a fine art I find that a little offensive.

And to answer your question, I think UM is just trying to get a better idea of who you are, as many pre meds have been involved in some sort of artistic endeavor and have learned a lot from it. I wouldn't say you're "out" just because you haven't.

3) Please provide a chronology of your clinical experiences/shadowing.
4) Please provide a chronology of your community service/volunteering.
5) Please discuss a situation where you had to use your leadership skills.
6) Please briefly discuss your research experience.
7) Please provide a chronology of your employment.

I would assume all these questions are under the "list it if you have it" umbrella. Not having 1 or 2 is not going to break you.

I too have spent 18 years participating in one as well, so I am really intrigued that they ask this! I'm sure UM just wants to learn as much as they can about their applicants. I agree with you, it's not "arts and crafts" at all. It's something I've loved doing and something that has made me who I am today.

This app is pretty sucky, considering we already talked about a ton of the same stuff in our primary AMCAS. When it says "provide a chronology", does that mean to simply list? Or should we provide explanations for each entry?

Also, when it asks for "Highest Composite MCAT Score", does that mean we can add up our best sections (if we took it more than once)???

Didn't mean to offend, and I guess UM is trying to get a better idea of the applicants. However I don't think it's remotely relevant to one's success as a doctor. One question about hobbies would suffice to "get a better idea of who you are" outside of medicine. Numerous questions on such frou frou non-science topics as "fine arts" and "journalism" are irrelevant to the whole admissions process in my opinion.

This secondary is SO FRUSTRATING! All of this stuff was explained in the primary, why do they need us to describe it again? Are you guys just copying and pasting stuff from your AMCAS activity descriptions? I really don't know what else to do...

I have not received a secondary yet... I woder if there is no screen why it takes longer for some to receive the invite. Maybe they do not want the server to be overloaded with applicants. I know it is still REALLY early in the application cycle, but I'm a bit frantic over this process. I just want to have peace of mind about this already.

I am in the same boat as you... I submitted AMCAS on 6/1 and was immediately verified and have received secondaries from a lot of places, but still not from UM. Did you receive an email from U Miami a week or so ago confirming that they had your primary? If so, you're fine. They say they don't screen which means that you WILL eventually get the secondary.

Look at it like this. Miami has a crazy long secondary, and people have already posted the prompts. Just go ahead and write the essays, so that you can submit ASAP once you get the invite. Good luck

Haha sorry, apparently they haven't changed the email template. The 1st email said "the decision to send you secondary will be made"; I haven't gotten the 2nd email but someone said it congrats you to be invited to complete secondary. It's all an illusion my friend.

Yes, I forgot. I did receive an email from them. Thanks for reminding me. I'll probably start working on the essays soon. You don't by any chance go to UM for undergrad, do you? I submitted my composite letter request on the first day, 6/6, and still haven't received an email stating it has been completed, and I can't seem to find anywhere in their mandatory session power point how long the turnaround time is for these letters. Thanks!

1500 words for all 12 questions or 1500 words per question. I'm thinking altogether right?

By far the worst, most frustrating secondary ever. Warning: don't click "save order" and expect your answers to still be there. I tried doing this, and all of my answers were deleted, except for a couple random words/ fragments of sentences in each box. I had to do it all over again

How are you guys dealing with the "chronology" questions, especially considering we already talked about most (if not all) of this stuff in detail on our primaries????????

I can't decide if I want to just list things? It seems like such a waste of time to come up with new descriptions....

What are you all doing?
