Default Which DO schools are the research powerhouse?

I have an extensive background in research and would like to continue doing it in medical school. I'm not sure which DO schools are right for me.

DO schools that are state funded have more money and are able to support more on-going projects.

Overall, most DO schools have really weak research.

P.S. use google to find.

Is there any specific topic you are interested in doing?

Public schools and schools like PCOM, CCOM that are on good terms with surrounding institutes and allow their students the chance to research there such as Temple or University of Health Science of Phili.

Tcom, to my understanding, is the only DO school with significant NIH funding.

By state law, only 10% of their incoming class can be OOS

Generally if you have no connections to Texas you shouldn't apply. Also Texas schools use a different app, so you'd need to sign up for that. Overall I wouldn't rely on it.

Almost all DO schools will have research that you can do and get involved in, however you are more at the mercy of what is available vs. what you want.

not sure what you mean by extensive background (what area?), but having done some research as well.....when I looked at school and interviewed I can tell you that yes almost every school does offer "research", but none of them have anything that compares to the big university MD schools....

Your best bet may be to go to a DO school in a city where you can pursue research somewhere else.

i guess your best bet is to ask schools you are interested in whether any faculties are doing this area of interest.

it will be hard. And if all else fails, you can finish your medical career then enroll in a Phd/masters somewhere else.

TCOM onlyhad 8 million in NIH funding last year: that's not even close to being a powerhouse Source: NIH RePORT

For a DO school, that's pretty respectable all the same.

From a presentation I saw, TCOM received $41M for research from all sources last year, and $40M in 2010...

NIH is one source of funding, however, it is the most transparent and usually largest source of funding. Total funding of 41 million still puts TCOM in the same level as non-research focused MD schools

Agreed.
I shadowed a TCOM doctor a few weeks ago, she said they had some strong clinical research going on when she attended. She graduated in 2003.
I also have a strong research background (basic research/benchwork) and would like to continue some sort of research in med school. But like everyone has already pointed out, DO schools aren't known for their research. Some do have good research programs but nothing as good as a mid-tier or upper tier md school.
