Hey everyone
I just graduated from college with a 2.88 cgpa and 2.74 sgpa(Used the AACOMA GPA calculator on the forums) and a degree in Biology. I have only retaken calculus so far. I took my MCAT's as well and scored a 27O (11, 6, 10). From what i have been reading on the forums i am pretty sure both my MCAT and gpa are low to be considered a good applicant. i am planning to retake my MCAT's, but i am little confused about how i should repair my gpa. i was planning to retake some of the courses i cot C's in at a local 4 year college. so i guess my question is does it matter if i just attend any 4 year college and take courses or do i have to go back and get like a second degree for the courses i am taking to be viable. for example can i just take courses and be done when ever i am satisfied with my gpa or do i need to go back and graduate with a second degree for the retakes to count? sorry for the lengthy post any advice would be well appreciated and thank you in advance for your help.

You have zero chance as is. A 6 section score means you need to retake your mcat. AACOMAS uses grade forgiveness, so take a year or two to retake as many courses as you need to get your gpa to a 3.3-3.5. As is, you have no chance with below a 3.0 since you don't meet the minimum requirements, not to mention wouldn't be competitive.

Retake the classes that you did worst in. first Retake F's than D's and so on. i would also Retake science classes before non science to bring up sgpa.

Keep in mind, math classes arent counted in science gpa for DO. Retake classes at a local university if possible, if not im pretty sure a CC will be ok too but im sure theres some debate on that. Probably a good idea to try and raise your VR to at least an 8. your other subscores are reallly good for DO, if you raise VR you could have around a 29 mcat which is pretty good for DO. Personally, if i was in your shoes and retook enough to have at least 3.0 cum/science and a 29-30 mcat with good ECs id prob apply then.. But bring your gpa up as much as possible though. I think some schools are wanting at least a 3.2 (although they usually dont screen this high) for both sceicne and cum.

Indeed your GPA is too low to be considered by Osteopathic programs. The average is a 3.5/3.3 right now, so that's the ballpark you need to hit to be considered a competitive applicant. At minimum, I recommend a 3.3/3.2, but you will need to apply broadly; it could go either way.

No need for a second degree. You just retake courses. Signing up as a second bachelors student, however, can help you get early registration, but that's by no means a requirement for aacomas to work.

yeah i agree the 6 on verbal is not gonna cut it i am trying to improve by doing 3 to 4 passages a day i bought the 101 passages book so hopefully that will help.
About retaking courses i found out that if i apply to a 4 year college as "undecided" the classes i take will not count towards my undergraduate gpa does it matter if the grades for the classes i retake count towards undergrad or not? so for example if i retake org chem and i am undecided the grade i get in O chem will not count towards undergraduate so does that have an impact on whether or not AACOMAS will replace my previous O chem grade with my most recent one?

Forgot to mention in my previous post my EC's include
3 years of undergraduate research
~70 hours of shadowing MD's and DO's
168 hours of volunteering at a hospital over the past 2 years.

My understanding was that anything taken after your first degree was considered Post-Bacc... but other than that, why wouldn't it count? If you took it at an accredited school, it should factor into AACOMAS.

Unless I'm reading your words wrong (maybe they should drop my verbal score a peg )

Just apply as degree seeking and then never finish the degree...seems like that would get around the problem you're having with your institution

yes yes I know, i thought maybe I'd have a chance at Univ of Arkansas cuz they have 90% in state residency and i'm a AR resident. I had an interview their 2years ago with a 22p and they told me my mcat was too low. Thanks for the constructive criticism about my no good 25. you just saved me 300 bucks.

Guess I'll just wait for secondaries from DO schools, and then when that fails I'll be off to the Caribbean. lol yeah got some tough decisions to make.

Apparently the 10th percentile is a 25 and 10th percentile sGPA is a 3.0. It might actually be worth trying as an AR resident.
