My extra curricular had a huge impact on my application process and acceptance into schools. I was a nationally ranked gymnast for many years, ran my own business, ran my own non profit organization and organized a few podiatry fundraisers etc...
It shows you are able to do more for our society and have interest outside of medicine. Doing an activity ie: sport, volunteer work, or hobby for many years shows the commitment level you have and shows examples of your work ethic... |

The above posters are super right.
I would say standard extra curics like just volunteering maybe 50-100hrs looks good but it wont make or break you. Whereas doing something significant like the above poster will be that leg up your looking for. I think Even things like volunteering in underserved communities and actually producing some groundbreaking feat in the process like reducing the drop out rate in inner city school through an outreach program you helped create these things stand out and they would be that extra push to get you that accetance that much faster. Just my .02 granted im just a pre pod.
