Default Is it still "early" in the cycle?

SDN Members don't see this ad. (About Ads)
I'm currently applying for the 2013 entering class, I am a reapplicant, with a split in MCAT/GPA. (high MCAT, mediocre GPA) but with interesting EC's since I've graduated college, and what I consider strong LOR's from work and from shadowing.

I'm nervous because I am throwing everything I've got in this app cycle--I've applied to 40ish schools, submitted everything early...trying to do things "right" this time around. I submitted 6/5, verified early, and have submitted 33/35 secondaries as of today (I'm waiting on a few more from the slower schools )

What's getting me down is it seems like everyone else is getting II's and I'm either getting silence or some kind of version of being placed on "hold" for interview or later consideration. It feels like I am losing whatever advantage I had of submitting my applications early! Especially when people who submitted later than me get II's almost instantly!

I keep hearing not to worry because it's "early" in the cycle. But am I wrong to be freaking out? I was hoping to have some early responses and II's at this point because I'm terrified of not getting into school again. In 2010 I only got one invite in September and attended the interview in november--ended up being deferred and ultimately rejected So as you can see, psychologically getting II's earlier than September means a lot to me. In some weird way it helps affirm for me that I have a better chance this year. And I know it's only been 3 weeks since my secondaries have been complete...but it still stings to feel like I'm getting put on hold while others are leapfrogging me for interview invites

Am I freaking out for no reason? Is SDN just making me overly neurotic? I gotta stop checking the threads every half hour....

Chill.

You have a 3.6/39/great ECs, you're gonna be fine.

You'll get IIs out the ass over the next month. August is when things really heat up.

If other people submitted things before you, they're going to be invited first.

Many places don't interview until October.

Don't freak out yet. Check when people are getting invites from your schools.

I guess I just needed to know when the "heats up" time is haha. My past application was plagued by late submissions and a complete dearth of strong EC's and LOR's so my concept of the timing of things is skewed

Yeah, try not to be such a premed lol. If you don't get an II before September, I will personally eat a soiled diaper. Literally. I will.

Withdraw all applications, NOW. I will give you an MD acceptance to let this happen, OP.

Anyways, with a 3.6/39, if you had 'meh' ECs (matriculate averages) you'd be looking at an 88ish% chance of getting in. With your ECs, I can't see you anywhere but 100% unless you're, pardon my french, apparently socially challenged at the interview.

How long on average does it take a school to mark you as complete once they receive your LORs and secondaries? This thread has made me nervous because I just found out that one of my letter writers had family trouble and won't be able to present the letter until 3 weeks from now. FML. As much as I hate to say it, I need someone to tell me that being complete by the end of August or 1st week of September is OK!!!

It is pretty heartbreaking to see your favorite schools give out interview invites around this time but you're golden. Do you know how wet schools get over numbers like that?

Usually when a joke is implied, you laugh and carry on. It's only a select few foreveraloners that point out obvious references. Carry on .

haha thanks everyone for their input. I realize I am being extremely neurotic about all of this but I had a moment of panic this afternoon when leafing through the school threads here. This is what I get for surfing the internet at work! I will stop being absurd and go watch breaking bad now to keep my mind off of this application craziness

but thanks again for the encouragement/reassurance everyone. Best of luck to those who are also applying this cycle!

Some schools like NYU don't give out interview invitations for a while. You won't get an interview invitation from every school. You might not get an interview invitation for several months. Don't worry too much about it, you can't really do anything about it now so just be patient.

I feel the same way too

Not to rain on the parade, but for me I'm always of the opinion the more facts the better. If you missed the first round of interview invites at a school, are you still in the running for the 2nd, 3rd, rounds of invites? Or should we hope for a silent rejection?

Well, it definitely does seem like by my view that a lot of people getting these first, second, third round of invites at schools have stellar stats in both MCAT and GPA/ECs/match in-state, etc. At least, that's what I'm trying to tell myself. My original question stems from the insecurity of not really knowing if I'm out of the loop now because I missed the initial invites.

But it sounds like from everyone else here that more invites are coming in August/September...where hopefully I'll start to hear from schools once they've already scheduled the super awesome-stat ppl.

Holding onto hope!

With a >3.8 and >35 I don't know what you'd group me as, but I've only gotten one II out of about 10 schools that've given II already. So either I'm out too, or there's still plenty hope!

I'd be more worried if you don't receive significant love by September. OP with a LizzyM of 76 has zero worries.

with all the talk of "apply early" and "early interviews!", "less competition early"! It's easy for me to lose sight that the cycle has literally just started for some people. But you're right. There's plenty of hope because there's no way schools are done filling their class on August 1st (though admittedly it can feel this way!)

a friend put it this way the other day: there's a school out there where I'm a perfect fit; at that point, my grades, MCAT, EC's early applications, LORs--it all doesn't matter. They think I fit and thats what's going to ultimately get me in to these schools!

This is exactly what people get told after their SO breaks up with them.

It's probably a lie, but if it makes you feel better, sure.

With your application, you should be just fine though. I suggest you go out, get a couple drinks, and stop checking your email/these forums so frequently. You'll find enjoying life right now is far more important since there is literally nothing you can do at this point if your secondaries are in.

I apologize if it seemed like I was lumping everyone in the same boat. I realize that not everything is about stellar stats but I was just making a quick observation of people who have garnered interviews thus far...

but WOW. congrats on the II's!!! That is really great! Good luck on those!!

I was complete mid-August last cycle and I got the majority of my invites in October or later. In fact my last interview invite (late February) turned into one of my two outright acceptances. n=1, but my story is common.
