Do you have any general information on how much one can expect to improve, following the recommended amount of time studying from these DVDs?

Thank you!

Are the DVDs chaptered for individual topics to make navigation easier?

How often is the information updated/revised? When were the current version recorded?

Thanks!

These DVDs were produced over the last few years. Every year they are reevaluated for content and so new content was added as recently as last year.

Yes, sub-topics are arranged by chapters in order to make navigation easier.

Our only study was to evaluate students who used the DVDs as part of our complete package. These students were followed for 3 years during which 2/3rds were admitted to medical school.

How are the lectures formatted and presented on the DVDs? I.E., are they filmed as lectures that depict a teacher in a classroom setting?

Most of the lectures are filmed with an MD in front of a whiteboard teaching and doing MCAT type problems. A little is done like our Virtual Classrooms (VC); here is a sample physics problem on YouTube from our VC: MCAT Problem

Roughly how long is each lecture? Does it vary based on the topic being taught?

As well, you mentioned that there is an MD standing in front of a white board....do they also offer tips and tricks to remember certain information, or is it basically just teaching the raw material?

Each DVD is 1-2 hours long. A sub-topic might be 3-30 minutes in length. The teacher certainly tries to include techniques, mnemonics or other to try to help you remember important points.

This may be a rather obvious question, but do the DVD's have optional subtitles available?

Also, are there any texts that correspond or that would be beneficial with these DVD's?

There are no optional subtitles. The teacher speaks very clearly, often writes on the whiteboard and there are occasional titles. There is also a free forum for students that have questions about any of the DVDs.

The Gold Standard MCAT textbook is not a required companion for the DVDs; nonetheless, each topic in the DVDs is cross referenced in the Chapter headings to a particular section in The Gold Standard book in case students wish to follow along.

A friends of mine told me that the DVDs are not very detailed and simply go over the very basic and sometimes even miss out on the essential topics listed on the AAMC website. For example, for biology endocrine lectures, all the hormones that need to be memorized... are not mentioned. How true is this with respect to the lecture?s

Good question and it might have been true in the past but not since we added more than 4 hours of content last year. Specifically, all hormones iterated by the AAMC in their 2009 Official MCAT Guide, are discussed in the necessary detail in our newest edition DVDs.

These 2010 Edition DVDs now also include an MCAT Study Plan, Thermochemistry, Electromagnetism and much more!

Like most courses you will take, all the material is covered in the book (i.e. in this case, the GS MCAT hardcover textbook). Despite these advancements in the videos, you should consider these DVDs in the same way that you would a good course at school: the prof.'s purpose is to make difficult concepts easy to understand, highlight and explain 80-90% of the material, emphasize problem solving techniques to get you ready for the exam, etc.

How much do these cost? Thanks.

The 16 DVD Package sells for:

Amazon.com: $400 (free shipping)
MCAT Store: $249 (free shipping)

Individual subjects are also available in 4 DVD sets for between $75 and $99 depending on the website; and, it's possible to purchase subtopics as online streaming videos for as little as $3: MCAT Videos

How much could I expect to improve my score by using these books correctly?

As mentioned previously, our only study was to evaluate students who used the DVDs as part of our complete package. These students were followed for 3 years during which 2/3rds were admitted to medical school.

  1. Is it recommended to use these with the GS MCAT textbook, or can they be used to supplement different materials?

It is likely that about 1/2 the students use the DVDs with the GS text and the other 1/2 use them in conjunction with other test prep books. It is like having a tutor explain all the most important MCAT content (so the book used is not critical as long as it is a useful book!).
