So I have heard that people start being notified about interviews in mid December...but do schools also notify those that are rejected this early? Just wondering what to expect and when to expect it...

they'll probably save the rejections until after the holidays 'sigh. but some programs just review sooo early... so it's not impossible, but pretty rare.

what can happen early is if you don't make the general cut-offs, you might just get a flat rejection: first they take the whole batch of apps and run them through cutoff or they have a sort of equation that looks at GRE/gpa/research experience and then cut the lower half.

I applied in 2008 for Fall 2009 entry and got a lot of rejections after April 15th when I hadn't heard anything from schools prior to that, so some programs wait to give rejections until the very end. However, some programs give rejections earlier than this, but generally I think interview invites are given prior to rejections.

ClinChildPsy13, werd, I agree that programs will want to ensure their slots are filled before sending rejections...

What is a PP? Sometimes the programs do let you know right away if you're rejected, not sure what would make them let some people know right away versus others not until past April 15th.

I am very eager to hear about my status as well! I'm glad to know that there are others out there in the same boat as I am. I hope we all find out soon.

Everyone should look on their programs' websites to see what their programs indicate the date that they will send their interviewees an invite by (if applicable). If you don't hear from them by then, then you know your answer!

UhOh - PP = previous poster :) Sorry, I've been using this website for a couple of years before officially signing up, so I forget not everyone is familiar with the acronyms. I was really confused when I first saw all the abbreviations.

I hope we all find out soon too! I am still finishing my last 2 apps (will be expressing them tomorrow) so that has taken my mind off of getting interviews, at least temporarily.

    Good luck to you :luck:

Saw this link in last years interview thread (yes, I know I'm obsessive to be reading through it), and thought people might find it useful! I gather that it is essentially a searchable interview invite, rejection, and acceptance site. Enjoy.

Yeah, I put together a list of the interview invites from last year for the schools I'm applying to, and the earliest I'll hear is 1/4...and most aren't until the end of Jan. I might, literally, go crazy from the suspense. I vote we all just decide to skip the month of December this year (and I'm saying that even though Dec. is usually my favorite month, what with my bday and Christmas and vacation)! All in favor?

Wow, y'all sound crazy :). I'm glad we all have company. The wait is indeed painful. Born2rumble1st and Student4Life0, where did y'all find this list with interview invites from last year? I think I'd like to be neurotic too.

Greendotcake, I applied to 9 programs. I'm unable to concentrate anymore because I'm living full of regret and remorse that I didn't apply to more schools in better locations. Grr.. Anyway, the programs I did apply to are: Wichita State, UMass Boston (failed to turn that app in on time though, so I guess I actually applied to 8), Northern Illinois, Louisiana State, DePaul (good location :)), U Connecticut, U Maine and Kent State.

What programs (and how many) did you/y'all apply to?

Uh Oh...I feel your regret. I also applied to 9 (well, officially 7 are sent in...the other 2 deadlines aren't until January) and I wish I had selected a few more schools. The majority of mine are in good locations, but I wish I had selected a few more funded programs.

Sorry to hear your in my same boat, Student4Life0! But misery does love company ;). Here's an idea you might consider: if you pick some schools now that are due, say, January 15th you may still have time to get all your materials in by the deadline. I'm considering doing this but I don't know if I'm going to do it or not because it would take a lot of work and I don't have a lot of time right now, but if you're really interested you might consider that option.

Yeah, I considered it...but the thought made me kind of sick lol. Having to get transcripts again, bug my letter writers for a second round, essays etc. I am just going to stick with my 9, and hope for the best! As a back up plan, I may just work as an RA in a lab for a year if I get rejected from all of the funded/partially funded programs. I am already looking to a back up plan!

Yeah, that's why I'm not seriously considering it too. So much work. It's GREAT to have a back-up plan. Good job for thinking ahead! This will be my second time and I'm so glad that I had a back-up plan the first time. Best of luck to you so you won't have to use your back-up plan though! :)

how funny, it seems as though 9 is the magic number this year! i also applied to 9 as well, some in texas (ut & unt), massachusetts (i applied to umass boston too - that app was such a pain!!!) and illinois (itt, i was going to apply to niu too!).

definitely starting to reconsider applying for more too.... but the idea of going through it all again seems like such a pain! :(

Greendotcake - you said you applied to ITT? What is that? Did you mean Illinois Institute of Technology - IIT? If so I have a question. It's one of the schools I'm considering applying to late since their deadline is Jan. 15th, but I have a serious hesitation about it. Please let me know if that's what you meant!

I really wouldn't stress about applying to 9. I think 9's a good number, if you're applying to a ton it means you'll end up spending less time on each individual application and therefore not have the best product possible.

As someone that applied to a lot of schools (23) there are two sides to this issue. I began and completed my SOPs around August so that time would not be a factor. I opened and completed all grad school apps by the end of September. I do not feel the product was of lesser quality due to the number of apps I submitted, however if you don't leave yourself enough time it would be... there is no doubt.

I think how many schools you apply to really depends on how many provide a good match for you. I have very specific interests and could only find 13 schools that matched those interests. At two of the schools, the professor I was interested in wasn't accepting students this year (one of which I didn't find out about till after I submitted the app!). That left me with 11 schools. Two of those schools did not have as strong of a reputation as I was looking for (and only provided partial funding), so they were cut as well. That left me with 9 schools that had good matches, a training model I liked, and provided full funding. Even if I had more time, there were no other programs that I could have applied to. If there were, I would have applied to more but I still feel comfortable with the choices I made. Now, if February rolls around with no interviews, I'll definitely reevaluate that statement... ;)

    I agree with you both.

Further, I hope I didn't come across disparaging toward you guys or generally defensive. I think each situation is unique. In my case I have a specific niche that allows me to apply to a broad range of schools and still have a significant and meaningful fit. I actually cut my list from around 30 schools to 23 and I still question cutting those schools. Further, my specific situation is different in that I'm older and do not want to be reapplying next year.

+1 for me. My research area is broad enough to fit with a wide variety of people. However, I only applied to places where I was a good match about 20 programs - both Ph.D. and MA. That being said, there are only about 5 that are top, top, top really want to go there! The rest fit well enough =)

I also agree that applying to that many didn't leave me as much time for each app as I would have liked. This week has been crazy trying to finish apps by 12/1. I ended up expressing 2 of them on Tuesday night!

    Hi All-

St. Louis University and George Mason University are 2 out of the many programs I have applied to. I haven't seen much on this site about these 2 programs. I personally like these programs and feel like I would be a nice fit. Anyone have any insight?? Thanks!

FYI: Online shopping is not the best way to cope with the never-ending month of December (which, world, don't think I didn't notice that you reneged on our pact to skip this month!). By the time interviews start going out, I'm not going to have any money to go to them!

OMG HAHA...I have been doing a lot of online window shopping, no purchasing yet (I really am TOO BROKE!). I find myself looking at shoes and pants, more than ever before! It must be because I'm constantly anxious and uncomfortable, and I will be for at least another month!

At least I know I am not alone in my online shopping stress reliever (that is until I have to actually shell out money for something like groceries). My online wish lists have ballooned in the last couple of weeks. I hope invites start coming soon or else it may be phone interviews for me!

I just received an email from Loyola MD's PsyD program (not for an interview unfortunately!) letting me know that their only interview date will be Friday, February 18th.

    Also,

I've been told by multiple programs that even if their deadline is later, they still review the applications as they come in. If you're a great candidate, especially with some of the programs that accept more students like PsyDs, they'll let you know earlier than the deadline that they want you to come for an interview. That's what I'm hoping for!!

Here's a link to last years invite thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=679923

Last year, some programs began notifying the second Monday of December, so some of you may start hearing very soon! Of course, most will be later in December and into January and early to mid-February.

IIRC, I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 (PsyD) programs that did this last year, so I don't think it's *terribly* common--it may happen, but it's not the "norm."

I applied to 23 schools, as I was in a similar situation where I was lucky enough to find a lot of professors who fit my research interests (which look at topic A in population B), so I applied to professors who focused on A and professors who focused on B), In the end, there are some schools I would have cut had I known some things in advance (e.g., poor funding situations), but overall, I don't regret my application strategy, although it was very expensive (however, the funding package I ended up receiving sort of justifies the costs, in my mind).

    Good luck to all!!! :luck:

So according to the thread from 2009/2010, UCSB notified interviewees Friday, Dec. 18th of last year. Does that mean they will likely be doing it THIS FRIDAY, the 17th? Anyone else apply there and feel totally nervous? It's scary to think I could have my first unofficial rejection in four days! Deep breaths.
