**2011-2012 MD/PhD Acceptances**

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has no one else on this forum heard back from Columbia? It seems odd that only one of us was accepted... Starjump, was your email an official one from the committee or something more informal from an interviewer or something? Also, looking at the acceptance threads from previous years, it seems like they historically notify by snail mail (maybe in early March? Confirm this). Just my two cents...
I have yet to hear anything from P&S following my 11/4 interview. It seems like a pattern at other schools for a few acceptances to go out followed by the WLs and rejections a few days/weeks later. Also, has anyone heard anything from any of the the 4 Southern California schools?

UCSD started rejecting post-interview back in January.

Regarding Columbia, it seems that they are doing waitlists this year also.

In e-mailing the coordinator at Columbia, it seems they do not give out e-mail acceptances and only use letters. He claimed e-mails were a rare exception if you are abroad. The letters were apparently sent out on Wednesday. I can only assume starjump received an unofficial e-mail or was an exception.

Good luck everyone.

hope this quells some of the concerns regarding columbia: for what it's worth -- i was assumed i was rejected when i didn't get the email on wednesday, but did come home to an acceptance letter on thursday, and got a brief email note re: acceptance today. so, it looks like you can still get an accepted even if you didn't get an email on wednesday

I got one of these acceptance emails earlier today as well! Best of luck to all.

I was wondering if anyone has heard any good news from Hopkins yet.

To anyone who was accepted at Columbia: Could you also access the admissions decision through the online application system?

Getting a bit worried...tried to see if I could login to the old secondary and it looks like my account isn't there anymore...

No I can't see anything special on the secondary website - all the email said was that they wanted to let me know that they had mailed the acceptance letter.

I haven't personally (see rejections thread) but I have met people on the interview trail who have offers. That being said, rejections were also sent out too, so no news may be good news. Good luck!

Yes. Hopkins has accepted a good number of people. But, they have not made any offers of money yet. Slimy way to do it if you ask me, but they initially make acceptances and then you hear if you are funded or not in March.

Also, got my acceptance letter for Columbia. Can not access any information online and did not get any email. So check your mailboxes (the ones made of steel hanging out outside) because good news might just be waiting for you.

Better to be accepted to Hopkins without funding than not all... I am just saying... rejection is much more slimy (especially after all your interviewers tell you how much they look forward to having you at Hopkins as a student).

Haha, but anyways I digress. From the people I have met, it seems rejections come as small envelopes through snail mail. Then acceptances are also through snail mail and may include a phone call. Good luck.

Last Columbia question: was it a large acceptance envelope or small? (This is relevant to my school mailbox size!)

Last Columbia question: was it a large acceptance envelope or small? (This is relevant to my school mailbox size!)

It is small, but if you feel the envelope you will feel that there is a return envelope in there.....It will fit in a regular mailbox, but it has extra stuff in it, so not a single sheet. Good Luck!

First of all, I don't think this is true. I met two people on the interview trail who claimed to have fully-funded offers from Hopkins (and some who knew they didn't have funding just yet). While maybe they were confused, I think what Hopkins does is give funding initially to their tippy top applicants and use the nonfunded offers as more of a waitlist, giving funding away as their top applicants decide on other places. In that sense, and in the sense that they make offers before they finish all their interviews (so they can't use up all their funding before they finish their interviews), I really don't think it's that slimy. Not trying to start an argument here, just saying I see merit in it. If you think of the unfunded offers as more of a glorified waitlist (where you can still go even if you dont get funding and apply for independent grants), it puts it in a little more perspective. That being said, I would never personally accept an unfunded offer, but hey, apparently some people do it.

Sorry, didn't mean to throw the thread into a tizzy before I went away for the weekend... Like I said, my email was quite short and, looking at it again now, unlikely to be a mass email although it did come from a director (not one I interviewed with). Definitely did NOT mean for it to be something to lose hope over - quite the contrary! I suppose I do have different circumstances that might have justified the special treatment, but it wasn't apparent from the email and I haven't been treated differently by adcoms before, so didn't think it was something to bring up. Sorry again! If anything the clear variation with which Columbia has chosen to notify people should teach us in general not to hang all our hopes on such little details.

I'm sorry for bringing this up again, but has anybody from west coast heard back from Columbia (either acceptance/rejection)? I'm in CA and still have not gotten anything in the mail.

The office said that everyone will be notified by mail. I wonder why it takes so long!!

Phattie - exact same situation here. Although I think the record for interview->decision interval may be my Sept interview at Pritzker - crickets from them still...

The MSTP office said that the last batch of decision letters was to be mailed out last Thursday so I'd venture to guess that early next week at the latest.

The MSTP office also mentioned that decision notifications by email were only for people with special circumstances such as traveling or studying abroad. I don't know how true that may be.

Thanks SBR249. It's interesting that I don't know anybody who's been rejected from Columbia... I wonder if they save those rejections for last :( .

Anyway, one can only wait... and hope!

Got the Columbia letter---asking me if I would accept the status as an "alternate." Anyone else get something like this? I had been told they did not do wait lists, so I feel like this might be a med school only wait list...

I also got the letter. I am pretty sure it is a waitlist for MD/PhD. I think that they are just trying to avoid over accepting, especially since they enrolled such a large class last year.

Based on the fact that the letter didn't mention MD-PhD and came at the same time as all the MD waitlist letters I'm guessing it was for MD-only. Either way, thoughful of them as always to leave this ambiguous.

Yeah, I didn't actually see the letter because it was sent to my mom's house, but upon talking to her it sounds like it was for MD-only (signed by the associate dean of MD admissions).

Holy crap!!!!! So excited, this has been a dream of mine for three years. I was wait listed last week for the program and got the acceptance email today. Thank you to whoever turned them down. This just officially made my life! :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited: :soexcited:

Was anyone else waitlisted MD and MD/PhD at Yale? Is the waiting list ranked?

I was accepted, but I can comment on this after talking with Susan yesterday. Yale ranks everyone......so yes. Other than that, I'm not sure. Susan said she has been getting a lot of calls from waitlisters and is therefore screening her calls because she has no good info to give them (and she feels crappy about that because she is a sweety).

I'd say just follow the advice for any school: Expess interest to admins, PD, those you interviewed with....maintain contact....keep the revisit dates open and hope that you can go! Good Luck! If you get the nod for revisit I'll see you there!

I was waitlisted. Do you know if anybody was rejected outright (post-interview)? Any indication of how big the waitlist may be or previous years acceptances? I take it from your post Justgo that they are not releasing where people stand on the waitlist (i.e. giving an indication of their ranking). If you could let us know when you hear regarding revisit that would be awesome... this way we have some indication of approximately where we stand.

The revisit dates are set. They have not released any additional information via email yet though (you can call and ask if you are accepted...you can also PM me if you want the tentative schedule). I'll let you know when I get the official revisit email. Cheers.

Thanks, justgo. Looking through last years thread it looks like we are indeed put into tiers... and unfortunately it also looks like the wait will be long.

At least you guys received news at all. For those waitlisted did you receive a snail mail letter? Cant believe they did not get a letter to me by today...

I guess I'm not alone in post-interview silence as of March 15. What's the consensus on schools that haven't told you anything post-interview by the March 15 deadline? I'm in a similar situation for UCSD and Northwestern.

Piper, it was probably a letter that got lost in the mail or an email that was filed as spam. I hadn't heard back from two programs and called one (rejection letter was sent in February; I never got it) and will call another later today. I'm not too optimistic. Waitlist is possible, though. To get over these downers think of NIH Oxcam!!! You can only go to one after all :)
I may never recover from the awkwardness of that phone call, though... terminally awkward.

UCSD has done that to me before, last time this happened, it was a waitlist. This year all rejections were emailed as soon as they were decided starting in January. So if you haven't heard it's probably a waitlist.

FYI, apparently they don't have to send you a letter by the 15th if you were waitlisted. (The 2nd school I called had placed me on an alternates list). That was news to me, I thought they had to tell you accepted/rejected/waitlist more formally.

Got the letter from Yale today... Was waitlisted. I wonder if they rejected anyone at all for MD/PhD?? Now I have to figure out tactfully if they will support the OxCam program or not... I do not want to hold a wait list spot if not. Good luck to my fellow waitlisters!

Their website says they don't participate in NIH GPP which I believe the OxCam falls under. Never hurts to ask though.

Sorry for the double post.

In talking with an MSTP student at Yale, he said that he thought that the MSTP hasn't pulled anyone from the waitlist in the past 3 years. Does anyone know for sure how true this is?

I cannot believe that is the case... just imagine the other offers that students accepted to Yale probably have (Harvard, Hopkins, Duke, Wash U, etc.). Their website says they give out approximately 25+ offers to fill a class of 12 students. There is no way they would admit 25 all at once, so I think they pull quite a few from the waitlist.

Also from a previous SDN MD/PhD acceptance thread:

Yale: bioartist (03/14/08, email), meowkat444 (3/14, email), seraph524 (3/14, email), Dodo23 (03/14/08, e-mail), solitude (same), pennquaker08 (5/22, off waitlist, by phone)

So it seems possible, if not always probable. :D Also in previous years Yale may have supported the GPP program... and OxCam does fall under that category. So it can't hurt to ask :D

Thanks Piper! You've given me quite a bit of hope both on Yale and OxCam front though it seems that the waitlist really won't move for quite some time yet. I haven't made up my mind whether to do it yet but would love to go to a school that gives me the possibility.
