Columbia sends out all decisions (acceptance and rejections) in March. I think Harvard and UPenn may do the same. I'm on the same boat- but since the interviews end in January for Columbia and Harvard (not sure about Penn), I'm going to assume that I'll be getting a rejection letter in March if I'm not invited to an interview by January. Oh, the waiting game...
+1 here.. and does Vandy reject by email or snail mail? anyone?

Just give their office a quick call, their administration is among the nicest in the country. Plenty of now matriculated students I met there did not complete their application until the December of their application cycle. They have at least one more interview date, so you might be in the clear.

Totally agree with that statement. They are fantastic and will be completely honest with you about what is going on re: your app.

Call the MSTP office if you are applying MD/PhD. It depends on the school, but generally, they will be the ones handling your application. At least from my experience.

I would always call the MD/PhD office, the worst that can happen is that they'll tell you to call the med school. You don't even need to give your name, just tell them you'd like to check the status of an application.

I called for an application update and then they promptly responded by email. They had 650 applicants. She mentioned 3.8+ and 36+, but that's on their website already I think. Good luck to the rest of you. :luck:

they didn't send me an email, but my status page switched to the following message: "The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has not invited you for an interview at this time. Additional reviews will occur and any change in your status will be communicated to you." pretty much means rejection, right?

Same here... guess it wasn't meant to be !

How does "The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has not invited you for an interview at this time. Additional reviews will occur and any change in your status will be communicated to you." mean rejection?

I think this sounds more like a hold than a rejection.

Agreed. I think maybe email means rejection, but this status update means "we filled most/all our interview slots and are waiting to see who decides they don't want to interview in cold cold Philly....you might get a shot youngin." I guess the clinch in the argument, do folks who got rejection emails also have this status on their page?

I would like to know who actually does get an interview at Stanford... Sheesh! They are rejecting people with interview invites at Hopkins and Harvard. Such a random process.

So I don't know how true this is, but I heard someone say that Stanford got in trouble with the NIH for not adhering to guidelines and had their slots slashed in half. If this is reliable, and like I said, I don't know if it is, that could explain some of this. Plus, you are certainly right that it is a random process, but it does seem that both Stanford and Tri-I did an excessive amount of rejecting this year of people who did very well elsewhere.

So I don't know how true this is, but I heard someone say that Stanford got in trouble with the NIH for not adhering to guidelines and had their slots slashed in half. Plus, you are certainly right that it is a random process, but it does seem that both Stanford and Tri-I did an excessive amount of rejecting this year of people who did very well elsewhere.

That is for sure a rumor. According to the MSTP directors, the NIH has actually asked Stanford to expand its MD/PhD class size. They will be taking in at least the normal amount of matriculants this year (10-15 or likely more), out of an interview pool of 50 candidates.

The abstract on Stanford's current T32 MSTP grant (ending in 2012) says that they admit 10-12 students per year and that the total number of supported students is about 2x the number of T32 slots.

Although, as an aside, if you look at the funding history of the stanford MSTP, their annual grant under Dr. Barsh (who was apparently director until 2008) was consistently 1.8-2.0 million per year. Then when Dr. Kim took over as the PI on the grant, it dropped in 2009 to around 1.0 million and is now just a hair below the 1.0 million mark. This correlates nicely with a drop in class sizes between the 2005-2008 period and the 2009-present period. So there may be some supporting evidence that MSTP funding did get cut by almost half, though the current grant application still envisions 10-12 students per class (which is not substantiated by enrollment roster data on Stanford's website). Edit: 10-12 student count seems to be pre-enrollment number of offers and not actual matriculation stats.

Edit: while I'm not sure about the exactly mechanisms underlying changes in MSTP administration, it is possible that the cut in funding may not have anything to do with quality of the program. It could simply be that once the director changes, the grant automatically has to be renewed regardless of status of previous grant and that the new renewal is a probationary 3 year type instead of the traditional 5 year cycle of the old one. If this is the case, then the probationary status of the renewed grant under the new director could be the reason for the funding cut. Though this is a tempting hypothesis, historical data from the transition from Dr. Krasnow to Dr. Barsh do not support it as funding actually went up during that period. Then again, procedures may have changed as the funding situation worsened in 2008.

That's some impressive virtual legwork there, SBR249.

I figured since we are all aspiring [physician-]scientists, it would be unbecoming to engage in gossip without substantiating data :D

Haha... still doesn't tell us who the heck is actually getting an interview! They should at least cut the number of essays to make you feel less stupid for wasting all that time.

I say we need to find at least one person who has gotten an interview there before the end of the cycle. They better have some science and nature papers and like a 42 MCAT!

I've met several people with Stanford interview invites while out on the trail. They seem to have about the same qualifications as everyone else, i.e. highly qualified. The entire process is far more unpredictable than I had anticipated.

PfNO22, so you got a rejection email? what does your status page say?

The Committee on Admissions reviewed your application but has not invited you for an interview at this time. Additional reviews will occur and any change in your status will be communicated to you.

I received a personal email because I had called them directly withou knowing.

ughghghg, i guess that's their form of rejection. no hope there.

I don't know if that's entirely true. I applied straight MD at Penn and got the same update. When I called them they said that there are multiple rounds of admissions and this means my app has been through one. It's obviously not a good sign but from what I'm seeing there is still a possibility that we could get interviews there.

Not to burst your bubble, but this is a confirmed rejection by the MD/PhD admissions office...

The T32 funding cycle is 5 years (except for first-time awards, which are 3 years in duration), and a change in director does not trigger an early renewal application. Programs that have significant problems are placed on a 3-year renewal cycle, and lose some of their trainee slots. If, after 3 years, the program has not satisfactorily addressed the NIH's concerns, the grant is terminated. If the program receives a satisfactory grade, the grant is renewed for 5 years, but it may not get the lost slots back (as they may have been awarded to other, more meritorious programs in the intervening years.) .

As far as the NIH requesting that Stanford increase the size of its entering class that a532 referred to, that might be interpreted as a directive for the school to spend more of its own money on the program. Typically, the MSTP grant only covers 15-20% of a program's expenses, the rest comes from institutional funds, mentor's grants, individual fellowships, etc. If Stanford relied on the MSTP grant to cover a significantly higher proportion of expenses, the NIH might not have viewed this favorably. The NIH likes to see a significant contribution from the institution, and this can be achieved by increasing the size of the program, or keeping the same number of students but charging more their stipends to institutional funds.

Over the years, many of the top programs in the nation have been placed on a 3-year renewal cycle. This is actually very helpful to the program because it is like the proverbial 2x4 hit to head of the mule (read the dean). It gives the MSTP program director the leverage to go to the dean and demand more money, more flexibility, curriculum changes, etc. The dean does not want the stigma of losing the MSTP grant on their watch, and usually makes the necessary changes. I would be very surprised if Stanford did not respond appropriately, and I expect that the grant will be renewed for 5 years.

I guess we'll find out next June, when Stanford's current 3 year grant is up for renewal. They are probably already in the process of submitting the renewal.

Got the dreaded status update for Pennsylvania, gonna just go ahead and consider it a rejection. Then Duke offered me an MD-only invite.... can't decide to be happy or not. Really really wish it had been an MSTP-invite. "Sigh"

Man, I would've been pretty happy with an MD invite...doesn't look like it's happening though...fml

Yea, I know a lot of people would be happy about it, I loved their program and it was one of my top choices before the MSTP rejection... But right now I am 100% sure, no questions asked, that the dual-degree is what I want to do. So an MD-only invite just seems somewhat useless at the moment. I guess if no one else gives me an offer for MD/PhD and for some reason Duke med accepts me, then I can start med school and apply laterally to their PhD program. I hope from my application essays they realize that is what I will definitely do if I go there. Wonder what the success of getting in to the program is for internal applicants...

Hopefully there is a Duke student on SDN to comment on this further but I just interviewed there and it seems like they are VERY open to having students apply internally, especially because the third year (and the curriculum in general) is so conducive to research.

I would imagine it would be easier there than at most other places. The curriculum is pretty awesome at Duke Med.... But I would have to pay them tuition for the first two years though :) I'm holding out for Johns Hopkins, Chapel Hill, or Yale and then will reassess if needed haha.

Also, anyone heard anything from UCSF? Seems a little quiet, no one posting interviews or rejections.

I got rejected this past week, just haven't gotten around to posting it.

And yeah, the wait for Hopkins is killing me. I called Sharon a few weeks ago and she said they're expecting to send out the first round of acceptances in the first week of December, so that should've been this past week at the latest. I don't know if they do it by mail or email, though.

I got an interview invite to UCSF (last date I think) like a week or two ago, but I turned it down. With my current acceptances I'm not going there. Hence, didn't list it. So.....maybe they will fill that spot? Who knows. I think they are probably done scheduling. When I went on to look at the dates all but a few dates were full for the MD interviews too and the last MD interview is February 2 or 5th (can't remember). Probably end of the game there.

Hmm the master calendar thing shows UCSF with interviews until February 14th I thought...Is that the date you were offered Justgo?

And yeah, the wait for Hopkins is killing me.

How were the interviews there? I am going January 5th. Anything out of the ordinary?... this will only be my second interview. Wish I could have gotten one more done before the most important one haha.

Everyone is super nice at Hopkins. I'm sure it will be very similar to your first interview. If you know your research, can explain it, and clearly communicate why you want to pursue an MD/PhD you will be fine. It was a low stress interview experience for me and I was far from an experienced MD/PhD interviewee when I was there (it was actually my first interview). So no worries, you'll do great .

No, I was offered a January date. But they have a scheduling system where you schedule the MD interview and when I went in to schedule the last date for all interviews, MD/PhD or MD was the first week of February. It's possible that they just aren't allowing scheduling for later dates, but I got the impression that this was not the case. Who knows.

I have previously proven that master calendar wrong with interviews of my own that I have gone on. A lot of the dates seem incorrect and honestly I'm not quite sure how it was put together...maybe initial predictions schools sent to AMCAS?
