Just got the denial letter in the mail this afternoon...Good luck to the rest of you
Just checked my inbox and.....Interview Invite!! I'm a Montana resident and this will be my first interview. Excited except I need to find a plane ticket from Montana. eww.....
Jellus! I put my secondary in the mail on Tuesday, so hopefully I'll hear something soon. Ms. Four is very quick on the email if you have any questions.
Good luck JRG!
Scheduled my interview for 10/24 looks like I'm interviewing with two different students, no faculty. Strange.
Thanks! Best of luck to you too! I'm positive you will get an interview invite too
Interview invite via email this morning!
Does anyone know how many out-of-state applicants are invited to interview?
Idaho applicant. I got my interview invite today but I haven't filled out the secondary yet. Does anyone know what time the interviews get done on the day they are scheduled?
All depends on when they schedule your interview. I had mine today and it finished at around 4. In comparison a kid I met there finished around 5. I've also heard of people finishing sooner, around 2.
JRG did I give you a ride to one of your interviews? Or am I thinking about someone else?
Are the people getting secondaries mostly OOS? I called them yesterday and they said secondaries are still being sent out. I've been waiting for months.
I personally have heard of 3 Montana residents currently attending UNSOM. Two from my school and one I worked with. Don't know any of them too well so I don't have too much insight other than that, but to me it seems like there must be a decent number given both that I've already learned about 3 and that there are three other WICHE states (Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Alaska). Take this with a grain of salt though.
Here is my IS timeline:
Got the secondary on Sept 27th, acknowledged complete on Oct 5th (via email from Pat). Interview invite on Oct 12th for the 17th.
But it is my understanding that they sent only a few secondary invites to test out their new online system (UNSOM used to use old snail mail style), which apparently does not work very well. To the best of my knowledge, they are now cancelling the online version and reverting to the past design so I am not sure how that affected subsequent secondary invites.
Anybody have experiences interviewing in Las Vegas?
I can't imagine that the interview process is able to be made absolutely equivalent in Reno vs. Vegas, and no two interviewers are alike or would ask the same questions (that is a good thing). But it all makes for a ton of subjectivity, and randomness into these kinds of evaluation.
So... does it look like I don't care about them if I've never visited Reno and chose to interview in Vegas too?
Unfortunately for us OOSers we didn't get to use the online secondary system. We still had to do everything snail mail. Not too bad though, it didn't cause any headaches.
In other news I just wanted to share my thoughts about UNSOM:
The new facilities are nothing short of amazing. New lecture halls, physical assessment type rooms, but best of all were the new cadaver labs. The students were unremarkably friendly. I remember I was siting there in my suit as a whole group of students walked by and a couple of them broke off just to say hi to me. I also didn't think I would like reno but I couldn't have been more wrong. It reminds me a lot of Montana. Even though Reno is south, it still gets seasons, has recreation and a great location.
I would kill to have an acceptance here , too bad OOSers have to wait until ~Feb 15th to hear a decision.
Good luck to everyone else!
Interview invite yesterday! OOS from Idaho! Secondary was received mid October and returned immediately.

Since we have to wait until February for a decision does that mean getting an early interview date is not so important? I have the option of a few dates in December and one in November, but if I could I'd rather have a later date.
Also, do you think it be a good idea to use the additional information section on the secondary to write a "why Nevada" type essay? Or just leave it blank?
How many of those interviewed get an offer? Are they upping the class size this year? I was reading something about the new health sciences building that said will help them accommodate a class size up to 100+. But that's too drastic. Anyone?
For out of state applicants, I have some bad news. The "gain-Nevada-residency-while-a-medical-student" loophole at Nevada has been closed as of the summer of 2011. Out of state residents will have to pay out of state tuition all four years. This makes Reno yet another $180K-$220K med school experience, just like all the other western states.
I have no information on acceptance offers, just matriculations. About 1/4th of out of state interviewed matriculate here. About 2/5th of in state interviewed matriculate here. Obviously the acceptances must be at least that large.
The class size will not be upped this year, but it will be upped next year (class of 2017). The new building is indeed bigger.

They send decision letters (accepted, denied, waitlist) on the 15th of each month January through April.
