What time exactly does it come up? The match website says 12:00 EST, but I heard you get an email earlier than that, true?

My wife wrote this last year before the match. Thought I'd post again for your viewing pleasure.

Match Eve Poem
My wife is one of the most clever writers I know. She just wrote this and showed it to me. I thought you all could appreciate it.

Match Eve poem by Mrs. Scarn

tWas the night before match day and all through the house
Not an applicant was sleeping, not even their spouse.
All the rank lists were numbered, submitted with care,
in the hopes that school "number one" soon would be theirs.

Hopefuls everywhere nestled snug in their beds,
while visions of third molars danced in their heads.
And me in my scrubs, i turned off the light,
and settled myself in for the world's longest night.

When from my iPhone there came such a clatter,
i sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the charger I ran in a dash; the screen came alive in a brilliant white flash.

The box on the screen blinked to notify me
It had just received an email that I needed to see.
And what to my wondering eyes should appear
but a subject line saying omfs match finally here!

In a rush of adrenaline, my patience was gone.
I'm done with this waiting, let the match bring it on!
As true as sdn my confidence came, and I whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

Now parkland! Now, Vanderbilt! Now, San Antonio or Unc!
On, Baylor! On, Oregon! On, Florida or Kentucky!
To my life's next six years! Now don't make me wait!
Now bring it on! Tell me! Show me my fate!

As if in slow motion, the email opened up.
My eyes scanned the page, my fingers crossed for luck.
In confusion I searched, come on, what's the catch?
And then, in awful clarity, the words, "you did not match".

My body went limp, eyes rolled back in my head.
My life flashed before my eyes. I fell back on the bed.
My throat was closing in! My lungs found no air!
My hands clawed my throat, and ripped out my hair!

This just couldn't be right! Was my mind playing tricks?
Could I really go on? Add another year to six?!
What had I done wrong? What qualities did I lack?
I must run far away and never come back!

"No, no!" moaned my voice in an unearthly tone.
I was ruined, defeated... The match had won!
I writhed in my misery, sweat soaking my scrubs.
I pled for some assistance, some help from above!

I opened my eyes to a glimmer of light, the clock on my nightstand showing midnight.
I bolted up straight, and off the bed I fell.
Somehow I had slept-and dreamed myself into hell!

I gasped for a breath, I reached for my phone.
No new messages! The email from hades was gone!
I laugh in hysterics, I feel I could dance! My fate yet undecided! I have another chance!

The night is still young. Several hours remain,
enough for at least 10 more nightmares of the same.
My pulse starts to slow, my head is finally clear.
There's still 6 dreaded hours until match day is here!

Instant classic! Thanks for posting

Not surprising that I didn't land more interviews without doing any externships, but I'm glad it worked out with only two interviews in the US! Was definitely expecting to look into internships.

I am a somewhat recent graduate of one of the above programs. I am sure each one has a significant issue leading to an unmatched spot. It's really embarrassing especially when this is happening year after year.

Agreed. I was in one of those programs and resigned from my position after my first year. Altered my perception of the specialty entirely. When it comes to OMFS, where you go makes a big difference. Congratulations to all who have matched this year! Its a long road to get where you are.

So it's not impossible to match at a place you've externed...it seems that programs are less likely to match people who have externed there...

4 or 6 yr?

So it's not impossible to match at a place you've externed...it seems that programs are less likely to match people who have externed there...

Maybe its just that after externing at certain places, they decided not to rank that program as high. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've heard that if you are interested in a particular program then you should definitely extern there. Of course, if you screw up your externship then that would be another possible reason some people don't match to the places they extern.

Agreed. In my experience, externing at a site you would like to rank highly can be one of the biggest advantages to your application.

I agree with the above posters, it's not impossible at all. Externships are a great thing all around. It lets programs evaluate you while giving you a chance to set yourself apart. I just went through the app process and let me tell you there will be a handful of good applicants for programs to choose from. You will see the same people over and over at your interviews at the top, well-rounded programs across the country and for the most part each of you will be a strong applicant. If the PD and I think more importantly, the residents, remember you, thought you worked hard, and liked being around you it can make a big difference for you come rank list time. Obviously the opposite is true also. Finally, spending one, maybe two, days at a program will not allow you to make the best informed decision about where you want to spend the next 4-6 years. Externships allow you this opportunity.

Lets keep this thread up guys

Anyone match at Banner Good Samaritan in AZ? Know of anyone who matched there..?

Thanks

1 second year has left. If my understanding is correct, he went into anesthesiology....but again, I am not an insider, I'm just letting you know what I've heard. They have a second (soon to be third) year from another program starting in July to keep their program full. Really solid program from what I've seen so far. I shadowed a first year out there and he was cutting a few pretty invasive cases. I really like all the residents I've met from there

yeah...i had a friend interview there and he was really impressed...but I know during the application cycle someone on the anesthesiology circuit said that he'd met an applicant who was in an OS program there...and something like they were losing accreditation or closing or something

The more programs the better for me :) keep churning out those 4 year OMFS!
