I'm doing BU and Tufts back to back, but they're in the same town. I'm combining some other schools by getting a rental car, fortunately I have friends to stay with.

I'm feeling iffy about Tufts...I know some people there and some pictures from their "orientation olympics" for the class of 2017 popped up on my Facebook feed and there were a half dozen students dressed up in colorful ponchos, fake mustaches, and sombreros....:rolleyes:

I was like "what kind of racist *** school is this??" ...then I remembered how low their URM numbers are and it all kind of made sense...I was honestly considering withdrawing and sending a letter to their dean of admissions about it. People mockingly dressing up as a culture is something that realllllly irks me, and I'm not sure if I could attend a school where something like that is considered okay.

I received an II from Penn this morning and received a separate e-mail from the Penn Med Office of Diversity. It included info about the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) and Native American Health Professionals (NAHP) with an invite to a special URM breakfast. I think I'm falling in love with this school :D

Haha they are doing that because UPenn got a bad reputation last summer when they were going to get rid of the Office of Diversity:

They stirred up a lot of problems last year and a lot of people in the SNMA and LMSA communities were not happy...I think they are doing damage control now...but it looks like they're doing a great job at it!

Hey, I know this isn't the place to get 'chanced' however due to my low MCAT don't want to get attacked on there.

I am URM and am applying disadvantaged, however I am an Int student so this makes it tougher

Call each school and ask them if you have a shot. Most top programs told my friend straight out that she wouldn't get an invite with her score and to retake. She was URM. You're score is still competitive but being an international student will not be in your favor. Just call and see.
 
Hello espadaleader out of curiosity can you tell me your friend's MCAT because I unfortunately only got a 29 and applied to a decent amount of top schools.

I just wanted to post something for my fellow brothers and sisters of all colors.

My first semester of college I went to a community college because of financial reasons. We had to declare a major for financial aid, so I chose biological sciences. When I did, my adviser (on my 2nd day of college ever) asked me what I wanted to do with an associates in biological sciences. I told her I wanted to get enough credits to transfer to a 4 year college and eventually become a doctor. She laughed and said 'that's highly unlikely, you're better off switching to a trade'. I've always had a thick skin so I let it go in one ear and out the other.

4 years later I am posting in this thread with 9 interview invitations. Anything is possible that you set your mind to, do not let anyone tell you that there is something you can't do. I have been discriminated against simply for being an African-American and laughed at when telling people I wished to become a doctor. Those laughs motivated me daily as I studied from sun up to sun down for classes and for the MCAT. Those laughs motivated me when I woke up at 6 AM and didn't come home until 5 PM to go shadow a doctor. Those laughs motivated me to obtain several academic and research positions, posters, presentations and awards.

We are not second rate citizens. We are the future of our perspective races. Our stories can lead the next generation. Who's laughing now?

I love this Adrian. I think you should write a letter to that adviser. I had a baby my junior year of high school (who is now an awesome eight year old) and even though I was the youngest student in Calculus, the teacher told me to drop out and get my GED so I could get a job. He saw a pregnant Latina teen and automatically assumed my life was over. Fortunately I transferred to a much more supportive school, graduated second in my class and am (fingers crossed) beginning med school next Fall.

Sometimes I appreciate the people who wrote me off because they made me the advocate I am today. It helped me and it will help the patients I serve.
