oh man... I was waiting to see who was going to start this.

I've written essay 1 but I'm not happy yet, and I've chosen where I'm applying, read the handbooks, stats and numbers about how many apply, # of spots, # of Psy.D.'s taken, etc...

I think reading this forum has prepared me some for what to expect, its just surreal to me that its my turn to go through the process... is anyone else feeling this way now that this internship app cycle is approaching?

Yay! I'm glad someone finally started this thread! I'm fixing up my CV & T2T hours, then taking my first stab at Essay 1 this week.

ClinPsych, I know what you mean. I remember when I was first applying to doctoral programs in 2008-2009 & now it's my turn to apply for internship. I'm so excited (& anxious), I can't even tell you. Time really does fly!

Best of luck! My cohort is applying, but I'm delaying it a year.

Wow you all are on the ball. I don't think I got serious when I was applying until August/September.

Same here (early August). Prior to that, I think I'd narrowed my list to about 15-20 sites and looked at the essays, but that was about it.

Best of luck to everyone going through the process this year.

Thanks for all the well wishes, all! I'm glad that SDN can be a place that we provide support for each other through this stressful but exciting process!

Welcome to the most addicting thread you'll ever participate in (at least for those of you applying). Good luck to all the applicants this year!

Members don't see this ad :)
 I was wondering when this thread would pop up. I thought "not 'til July 1 at least." Guess not.

Weeeeeee!

I have my almost final list of sites, and I've started free associating on Essay 1. I track my hours regularly already, and my CV is pretty up-to-date. Meeting with my DCT next week to discuss next steps...

Hi all! Been lurking for a while but finally decided to come out of hiding when I saw this thread was started.

I've come up with a preliminary list of about 12 sites, kept my CV and Time2Track hours up-to-date, and started my cover letters. Planning to start Essay 1 in July.

Best of luck to everyone applying this cycle! :luck:

ugh.. please no.
I guess in one sense, I'm "ready" since I didnt match last year.. so lots of stuff is already done. But I need to re-write the essays (obviously, right!?) and start narrowing down the list from 29 or whatever I have. I truly dread this process.

I don't know if you necessarily have to completely rewrite your essays. I am in the same boat, I have some tweaks to do on them for sure. But I landed a handful of interviews with the essays I already have, so I don't think I would want to start completely from scratch...what if I write worse ones? But I am in the same boat, dread is setting in. It will set in even more once APPIC directory updates the site statistics and all the application numbers go up by 50 percent...

glad to hear from someone else in my boat.
I know, I got interviews last year with my essays, too.
I think having my dissertation defended by interview time will also help, I hope.
My program wasnt APA accredited last year (new program) but will likely be here in a month or so (site visit in April) so I also hope that will greatly influence things...
More hours, too.. and according to others in my cohort, I probaby guesstimated on supversion hours too low last year, so changing that + new supervision hours will hopefully help, too.

Warning: The following is pure speculation

I don't know if the supervision hours increase will alter things much (unless your ratios were way off last year), but I would definitely think gaining APA accreditation and successfully defending your dissertation could both significantly strengthen your application.

Best of luck to you. Last year seemed to be particularly rough pretty much everywhere. Just in my own (small) program, I knew at least a few people who either didn't match in phase I, or who matched much, much, much further down their lists than expected. And from what I could gather, the same thing happened here at my internship site with nearby grad students.

I hope that's true. I talked to a few people who I know and somewhat trust, and when I relayed the same things, they nicely balked and said that I shouldnt bet on that.. and that fixing the essays will likely get me a lot more traction.

Writing has always been one of my weaknesses. But... my wife is an excellent writer, and I'm sure she's motivated to help proof and give feedback (we were not married this time last year).

I really would be surprised if going from non-accredited to accredited didn't up your chances, although it might also depend on the sites to which you're applying. By being accredited, I'd imagine it should increase the number of sites for which you're eligible (same with having a defended dissertation).

Although yes, of other things in the application, essay #1 is the one I continually hear brought up as probably the most important (or at least the most-remembered).

Perhaps this will be taken as a bit harsh to those who did not match last year, but I strongly advise those of you who got interviews last year but failed to match to practice interviewing. Find a faculty member who is willing to give direct and honest feedback (in a soft enough way you can hear it), or better yet, someone outside your department who doesn't know you at all. Ask if your DCT knows someone from another department/university or in the "real world" (HR person, perhaps) who would be willing to interview you. Or, if you've got the resources, hire someone who does interview prep. Videotape them, set them aside, and then go back later. It might suck to watch yourself or to hear criticisms from people, but if this is the edge that you need to get ranked high enough to match, then it's worth it.

Having made it through internship and am now on the "other side," watching students fail to match, particularly those who got interviews, I suspect that interviewing style and skill plays a larger role than we might like to admit. I say skill because it takes skill to come across as confident but not cocky, enthusiastic but not idiotic, etc. By the time interviews come around, the game is as much about likability as it as about qualifications and "fit" on paper. "Fit" in person is much more nebulous, open to heuristics and biases, and can be very idiosyncratic from interviewer to interviewer. You also have to find a way to stand out amongst an increasingly competitive pool.

It probably sounds mean for me to insinuate that you didn't match because you came across as unlikable, lacking confidence, overconfident, etc., and as I don't know any of you, I've got no way to know what happened at the interview or at any other point in the application process. The truth is, though,....no one will know exactly why you didn't match, so why not take every opportunity to improve your chances this year?

Best of luck to all those applying this year! Yes, essays, APA accred, dissertation progress, interviewing skills, hours, etc. all matter - but remember that this is a MATCH. Conveying your interest in the site - for example, why the site is the right fit for your future career goals and how your previous research/training experiences have guided you to this site - makes a world of difference. Given that we all (for the most part) come from APA accred programs, propose our dissertation topics, have great practicum experiences and (hopefully) are passionate about this field, finding sites that meld with who you are as a professional and where you hope to go as a professional will help distinguish you from other candidates. It is difficult to think about moving, but the best "fit" may be outside of your current geographic area.

Any other second timers having difficulty starting?

I have what I think is my list- I look at it and I'm confident it's good but then I constantly second guess myself- but every time I sit down to start my cover letters I freeze. I don't think it's the fear of going through the process again as much as it is the fear of not matching again.

Any suggestions? :/

Anyone have any thoughts on the importance of integrative reports? I'm only going to apply to university counseling centers next year and almost none of them do integrative repots yet it seems like it's something that is valued. I only ask because I'll have to create an opportunity to get some experience with them and I'd rather just focus on the 1,000 other things I have to do.

I cannot speak to college counseling centers, but being able to show experience wih integrated report writing is an important aspect when applying to hospital spots, particularly in a VA setting.

As for the essays.....

Essay #1 is really the only part of your application that the reviewers get any kind of feel for the applicant, so make sure that it isn't just a review of your CV. The cover letter used to be a place to highlight this type of thing, but it was cut when the application process was moved online.

For college counseling centers, I wouldn't worry about it very much. Do it if you can gain the experience easily, but if it will greatly take away from your other pursuits this year then I don't think not having any will hurt your application at the majority of sites.

good luck to everyone that is applying this year!!!! i am applying myself!!! we can do this!

Most college counseling centers are not overly interested in your reports. However, they do want to see that you have written intake reports. Also, some counseling centers do care about testing and it will be part of your training. Off the top of my head I know College of William and Mary, U of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and U of W Madison all have you write integrative reports on internship. If you have any questions about applying to CC feel free to PM me. I applied to a bunch last year (mostly in the Midwest and east coast) and matched at an APA accredited CC. Good Luck! :luck:

Thanks for starting this thread! As I'm narrowing down my list of sites, I'm wondering what proportion should be "reaches," versus sites you think you have a better chance at, etc. Any thoughts?

Thanks! Good luck all - it's somewhat comforting to know we're all in this together :)

This is just my experience, but when I applied last year, the sites where I thought I had a really good shot at an interview were completely disinterested in me. It was pretty terrifying to feel like I had no safety net. I had much better luck with my "reach" sites, including the site where I ultimately matched. I would recommend including a wide range of sites, because it's really hard to anticipate how things are going to work out.

Exact same experience here. Shoot for the moon, because...well, they're all moons I guess :hungover:

Oh, lordy, I've been checking for this thread but totally unwilling to start it. I have a list of schools organized in a time-consumingly beautiful Excel sheet, hours all sorted out, and a few reports chosen for sites that want them. Two LORs asked for, and the other 2 will get super mad if I ask this early. For the essays, I'm waiting for a night when all distractions are out of town, and I can drink straight from a bottle of wine while I type random crap.

/defensive humor in an attempt to mask crippling panic

This process is difficult, but doable.

To those who got interviews and didn't match: I would actually ask a site or two WHY your interview didn't go well. My new internship director himself didn't match the first time, called for such info and was able to improve his interviewing skills.

But that's so far away!

Just count hours and write essays for now!
:)

Good luck!

Yes. Apply to all the sites YOU WANT TO WORK WITH. Even the big names. I got interviewed by big names and some of my "safety sites" didn't even interview me. I have a friend who got a Harvard affiliated super, super competitive internship, while some sites that are far less famous, and that our school has ties with, didn't invite her to an interview.
Don't make the decision for them!

Grrr-argh!

Just received an email from the DCT asking to confirm if we planned on applying this cycle (although DCT assumes she knows already, she wants to verify).

In the meantime, I'm attempting to avoid the internship issue entirely to focus on the almighty dissertation which should be taking precedence at this point. I won't be allowed to apply if I'm not proposed by 'x' date (which is looking more & more unlikely due to issues with the advisor), so I'm finding it difficult to gain motivation to continue pursuing internship crap when I need to channel energy into the dissertation! :scared:

But I do have a tentative list narrowed down to approximately 30ish sites (no, I'm not applying to 30 sites!), so I suppose that's something, eh? Not too concerned about my CV as it goes through multiple updates each year, and I'm fairly comfortable with it.

And to think we had some nutjobs who applied last year actually recommend that the program bump up the deadline to the summer if not the end of the previous academic year. "Everyone" has their essays written by then anyway. <lmao> Yeeah, m'kay. WTF?!

Now back to sticking my head in a hole in the ground.

Alrighty then, I noticed that APAGS has a new book to be released ... in September?! Is it just me or does this seem a bit late for folks working on essays for the upcoming cycle? Wondering if I should suck it up & obtain a copy of the last book (which I hear IS dated due to changes since they last published) or wait 'til September for the new edition.

For those of you who went through this in the past, did you think the book was worth it? I'm referring to the red copy if it helps jog your memories.

I REALLY think people hype up these essays way too much. You should be able to write well at this point. Dont come off as a jackass in number 1 and be somewhat creative with it and you will be fine. The rest, frankly, can be boiler plate, because lets face it...we know what they want to hear. You should relish multiculturism and be evidence-based, even if writing about you're dynamic orientation. What other directions can you go really?

Er, if you listen to our dept, no one knows how to write, and you will drive yourself batty going through umpteen million revisions with half a dozen different faculty members. Not looking forward to "the process." If I go through the whole mess at all this year.

Do it with 2 people. One person's persective, then another. Thats it. More than that is unecessary. Everyone's gonna have a different opinion, thus it wont help you. Law of diminishing returns...

I think this is a good approach. It seems like folks have gone for 3, 4, & 5 people in the past, but not sure if this is what students were doing on their own, or if this is what the dept was requiring for some convoluted reason. Gives me the willies.

:diebanana:Just informed that advisor is out 'til end of the month. I quit.

But, hey, at least I finally received a response...

Good luck everyone!

I'm going to be applying this year... pretty much have my list narrowed down, I might do the stupid thing and eliminate one or two programs because I just don't want to wind up in Texas. :).

APPIC application goes live in about a week. this is getting too real. :).

Hi All,

I am applying for internship this year and am a bit nervous already. Anyway, I used the Insider's Guide to get into grad school and would like to buy the APAGS book to help with Internship. The third edition/new version comes out in September, but would that be too late in the application process? Should I just buy the old one (e.g. second edition) or wait it out for the new one? Are there any other guides to internship applications that are better/more recommended than the APAGS Internships in Psychology?

I'm kind of wondering the same thing. I bought the second edition in the Spring (for less than $10, knowing it was somewhat outdated), primarily for the purpose of getting some guidance with the essay writing. So as long as those requirements haven't changed very much, I figured with the old edition and email updates from APPIC, I should be fine. But I'm still not sure.

I don't really know what the 2nd ed. covers, but I can say that I was able to successfully navigate the process without any sort of guide. I also didn't have anyone else in my lab to talk with about things, but a few of the more recent grads were very helpful, as were other SDN members.

APPIC generally does a fairly good job of providing all the materials and information you'll need to properly fill out the application. As erg mentioned, by now we probably all know how to write a decent personal statement, and having perhaps 2 or 3 other people look it over can help seal the deal there. Thus, I personally would say that if you can find a guide on the cheap, go for it; otherwise, save your money for the application and travel fees, and just rely on SDN, your classmates/peers, program faculty, and your own competence. Heck, if you're really worried about the interviews, you could even use the money saved on a session with an interviewing coach, or something similar.

While I agree that these essays were over-rated, I would say that input never hurts. At worst, you just don't take their suggestions. When I applied, everyone else applying that year circulated statements and we gave each other feedback. Also gave me some good ideas. I didn't think it was a waste of time. I got my #1 choice, but not sure if it was the essays - I think LORs are much more important.

Oh, I have every intention of receiving input. The problem I see (or saw) was that we had students who were circulating to several faculty members and then making tons of revisions each and every time. We had one student who actually admitted that she felt she "lost" her own voice within the process because there were too many spoons in the pot, so to speak. She thought it made a mess of her essays, yet she "couldn't say no."

Yeah, it only makes sense to get several opinions if you have enough confidence to maintain your veto power. In my case, I took suggestions I think are good and ignore ones that I don't like. It's not like you have to show the people what your final version looks like, and if you do, you can just say you prefered it another way (but thanks for X suggestion, which I did use).
