Has anyone heard about Miami getting a residency approved and matching people this year? I ran into a few students from there told me on the interview trail. They said they are hoping to have approval in early January, then interview as much as possible, and hopefully fill in the SOAP. Has anyone else heard this?

I find it highly unlikely that not a single individual here on SDN mentioned this. Also, my specialty advisor went over all the new programs with us and this was not one of them, and I did an away in Florida and not a single person brought this up. Not to mention a google search brings up nothing.

Yes. One of my mentors will be a new faculty member there. They haven't shown up on ERAS yet because they just finished the site visit a few weeks ago. It will be at Kendall Memorial Hospital. That's all the info I know (I'm waiting for it to pop up on ERAS).

I just received an invite to be on the wait list at Utah. On interview broker there are anywhere between 5 - 9 people signed up for all of the dates. How realistic is it that they will receive that many cancellations and go that far down there wait list? I signed up for a date with 5 people on it that is in early December vs. the last few dates in January which have 8+ on the list already. Is this a good strategy? All advice would help as this is one of my top programs.

Yep, this should be happening soon (Miami student here). I think it's gonna be a great program...they've got good leadership lined up and there are always plenty of interesting cases around.
 
Why Kendall Medical Center and not Jackson Memorial Hospital? I had no idea they had a burns unit, I guess it's a year old? The program will be affiliated with UM?

It's probably due to the private emergency group (Sheridan) that's helping with the Residency setup and their affiliation/arrangement with Kendall. I know they were recruiting pretty heavily for APDs, Ultrasound and Research directors a few months back.

It's particularly worth pointing this problem out now because of the latest charting outcomes data. The 2011 edition showed that in EM, ~100 people ranked 16 or more programs. In the 2014 edition, that number had ballooned up to 237. That's a stupid trend that shouldn't be happening. Once you rank 12 programs, your chances of not matching are ~1%, and it doesn't improve with ranks beyond that. So people are just soaking up interviews needlessly.

That being said, there aren't a lot of spots open in the SOAP/scramble every year, so everything seems to work out.

there's not a lot of spots open b/c people do a long rank list, hidden spots that are not advertised and other internal residency issues. also look at the data itself, some don't include FMG/IMG/DO (I think nrmp still clumps DO with FMG). it only works out in the end if you match. that's the whole reasoning behind being a competitive program/specialty is to attract certain specifics.

every year I get emails/meet that 1%...there's always something on the app that held them back or they're just crappy at interviews. I've heard the "ranked 10 programs only as told by my advisor because statistically...." story. most of them get in on the next go around b/c it was just poor advice and didn't play the game well. on the other hand i know 5-6 that didn't match for 2 years and ended up finishing FP or IM. a couple that got in on tries 2-3, dropped their current program and finished EM. a few never got into residency at all (all FMG). there's a reason why a candidate needed to do transition year or take step 3 to prove themselves, or just not a good fit. also note programs have to eat up the cost of your residency if you exceed your initial years allotted which makes you a potential lesser attractive candidate. plus loans have to be deferred, may have to move, 1 yr less of earnings....etc

the point is, sure it's 1% but if that's you then it's 100%. statistics are only good for the data collector with nothing to risk. it's your career/residency at stake, I highly encourage you to max your chances. you've worked too hard to drop the ball now. take the trail stories with a grain of salt. if you got an interview slot, go to it. you maybe surprised at what you see. if you absolutely can't see yourself living at x, quickly cancel but mostly don't be a "no show" at the interview. if you paid to visit 15 places, mind as well rank them (unless you absolutely don't care to be there even if it's your only shot) b/c you never know. most will match, getting what you want is another question. good luck and play the game

Just heard from a few program directors that there is a little fear, that because you have a smaller group of people going on a record number of interviews...that there will be quite a number of unmatched spots that will show up in the soap. So I guess for those of you down on there luck, the party ain't over till its over :).

I think if this is true it will ultimately end up being a bad thing, as it would be a disruption in a system that ultimately is working for us to get us our best choice..

I think this one might be an interview trail hallucination. applicants has historically out number interview slots. in recent years there has been an increasing number of applicants and every program will send out x number of invites based on available time, resources, dates...etc, which I guess has close to >99% response. I can't say a true 100% because I don't have data but I think it is. I could be wrong so I'll wait till the stats come out. until then don't put too much stock in this. there's always left over spots towards the end due to cancellations, weather...etc and programs have called the wait list. now that is something I'd follow up on if you're still awaiting interviews. the rank list from students and programs will be as long as ever and unlikely to change

I received one today, and around 5-6 total in the past 3 weeks or so, just haven't felt like posting them.
 
1 interview, 1 waitlist, 1 interview off a waitlist, 2 rejections, and 2 cancellations in the past 2 weeks. Trying not to be so specific as you could be easily identified now that things are slower. but they are moving!
 
Just a PSA as we are in the time of fast flying cancellations.

A. Don't no show. You can get yourself burned and even your home program burned. Nothing pisses off a super nice PD off than a noshow. Weather and health-related are exceptions.

B. Give enough time and notice, otherwise it's effectively a noshow. Optimally 2+ weeks, 2 weeks fairly standard, 1-2 week not great, but fine. <1 week, go to your interview. Common sense: Cancel your interview if you are sure you won't go.
The big thing here is that holidays do not count. Do not expect Christmas week to be an extra week's notice, for example. Sending in cancellations on a Friday is effectively a cancellation the Monday after. A cancellations in the afternoon is really a cancellation the next morning.

Be respectful to everyone involved.

Is it a hot topic just this year? I assume there's plenty of late cancellations every year. Is it a hot topic in that it's controversial what people consider a "no show"?

Your original post laid out a clear set of rules for cancelling interviews. While everyone can agree that you should cancel as soon as you know you aren't going and that you should never 'no show', I think that in between there exists some gray area that lacks consensus. For example, earlier in the season I was offered an invite to a program that had always been one of my top choices, as presumably somebody had just cancelled. Well, wouldn't you know the date was six days away and I already had scheduled an interview that in all honesty was just an interview I was using as a back up. I was very conflicted and I immediately called my PD to discuss the ethics of the situation. His advice was to send a very apologetic email explaining the situation to my original interview and go ahead and attend the recent invite. I felt really bad about it but ultimately I don't think it would have done anybody any good if I had attended the original interview out of a sense of obligation.

I think situations that fall in the gray area (exhaustion of funds, new development in sig other's life, etc...) are probably more common than you might first think and it would be really great if all the PDs/APDs could get together and publish something addressing the etiquette of interview cancellation.
 
the etiquette is
1. go where it's best for you
2. don't feel guilty for cancelling, they'll try to fill it
3. try to reschedule if you want to do both
4. if you can't, then cancel as early as possible
 
I'll just say that at short notice, call in addition to sending an email. It's not good form to send emails that may or may not be read in time to a program that needs to find short notice replacement and those replacements to arrange travel. Six days, eh, cutting it close. Couple days, and you really need to do your due diligence to allow a program to find a replacement as soon as possible.

Exhaustion of funds? That's not something that sneaks up on you. If it's a sudden event, PDs understand.
 
Hey all!

In the lucky position of being able to cancel 1-2 interviews, but am struggling to decide which one! Really hard to choose because I haven't been able to get any inside scoop on these: Staten Island, NJMS-Newark, and/or U of Chicago.

If anyone has interviewed/rotated/worked at these programs, I would love to hear your thoughts and impressions. PM me if that's better for you. Thanks!

Some of you can help me out. I had 235 on step1, 250 step 2, passed cs. 2 sloes, multiple pubs. and cool stuff on my app. 2 program directors said I'd probably get interviews to most places I applied. I thought they were crazy...now i KNOW they're crazy. I got some really good programs, but other ones I wanted to interview at have been silent! Does everyone have a 250+ on step 1 this year?

You forgot to comment on the strength/grades on your sloes and clerkship grades.

Tons of people are in the same boat as you with similar board scores, etc (IE: slightly above average).
