Hey guys, just FYI a couple of us Canadians from first year at USyd have set up a facebook group for you all as well. Check this out and spread it around please. Last year we had a group for ourselves and everyone was really helpful about organizing future paperwork and finding housing roomies etcetc. Feel free to ask questions to upper years who went through the process already and we'll try and help you guys out!

Congrats to those accepted and hopefully we'll be seeing you soon!

Hi everyone!

I'm so happy to have come across this post - I'll be starting at the University of Sydney DMD program in Feb 2015 as well! I was reading through this thread and I had a question about the specializations - it was mentioned that if you complete a speciality in the US or Australian you can't practice as a specialist in Canada unless you complete a bridging program... can someone elaborate on this for me please? :)

Looking forward to meeting all who will be in Sydney next year! =)

More options, specializations, networks and much more are also offered in Australia. Not sure if you are Canadian or American, but Canadians have an advantage going to Aus for dental school due to the reciprocal agreement between Canada and Australia. But, for the reasons you mentioned above, reasons I mentioned above and many more, Aus is a very viable choice for Canadians! :p As a Canadian, the only reason that would push me to go to a US school is to be closer to home, but that is not a deal breaker for me!

Your friend's story is very interesting, not heard before. I have 8 friends currently in Aus studying dentistry, and they absolutely love it with no regrets! In fact, 5 of them want to stay there and practice :Dthere are 40 canadians JUST in the school I got accepted to.

Bottom line, do what is best for you and what you think is right for you. Although both are fairly viable choices, most of us Canadians know which is the most viable choice for us.
Hi can you please post your GPA & cDAT if you don't mind me asking. Also what other criteria is U of Sydney looking at? Any Letter of recommendation or shadowing ? Thanks.

Hello everyone,

It seems that no one has began a thread for international students applying to Australian dental schools for the 2015 entry. Is anyone here applying to Australian dental schools? If you are, do you mind sharing what schools you are applying to?

I hope that everyone will contribute, and those who are currently studying in Australia or have gotten accepted can jump in as well.

Thanks guys ;)

Hello,

I am planning on applying to University of Adelaide and University of Griffith this year. I don't have a science background however, I did complete a few biology and math courses in university for my nursing undergrad in Canada. I am wondering if anyone is in a similar situation as me (non-science undergrad)? I didn't have the highest GPA because I did not plan to continue studying after nursing (I have a 3.17 on a scale of 4.0). Any idea if my GPA would even be considered if it's that low? Or should I upgrade before even thinking of applying? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,

Congratulations on your acceptance! If you don't mind me asking, what was your GPA applying into the program? I am just trying to get a ballpark idea of what is acceptable.

Could people who got accepted post their stats please? :) Theres many of us that are considering applying for Austalian dental but we want to first know if we would actually stack up!

Not sure what you mean by stats, but I applied with my GCE A level results. A's for H2 Biology, H2 Chemistry, H2 Economics, H1 Mathematics and an A for General paper. I believe the interview and the PQA places a higher weightage on whether you get admitted or not? Hahah correct me if I'm wrong :)

University of Sydney DMD 2015 entry.
I got in with GPA 82% (or ~3.5/4.0), Canadian DAT (Perceptual: 20, Bio Sci: 22, Chem: 23, Reading: 27; they don't require carving).
I think as long as you have a GPA of 2.7/4.0 and a DAT reading score of 15, you will get an interview. And after the interview, it's 50:50 on DAT score and interview score. So if your undergrad GPA is low, do not worry. Focus on the interview.
No dental shadowing experience or extracurricular activities are required to apply.
Hope this helps.

what if you apply with MCAT score... do they value DAT higher than MCAT? I wont have my DAT score by early july, so I would rather apply with my MCAT score since the deadline is in June, but Im not sure how theyre going to view it
