2015 PHAP application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about since I haven't run into this problem. I do know that we already chose that states and territories we are willing to relocate to in our initial application.
Ohh haha I did not see that in the initial usajobs application. Were you able to select locations in FMS? It doesn't really matter at this point, I was just curious if others were able to select preferred locations.

Forgot to mention this earlier, but regarding the location selection, I only selected 4 States that I would move to and was offered a position in one of those states. So don't lose hope if you didn't check all states. Still no guarantee that you'll be selected for one of your preferred locations though.

I just remember when I was doing the initial application in USA Jobs that I was asked my location preference. Also, I was reviewing my application and I see what you were talking about before. I really don't know what that's about. I wasn't given any option on FMS to select a location preference. I submitted my application, so I'm not going to worry about it now.

Is anyone having problems with the word count? In word it says I have 250 words but when I copy and paste to CDC application, it says I have more than 250. If so, did you decrease it or submit as is?

Might be the formatting. I'd try copying and pasting the text into a plain text box first, then recopy it into the application screen. You can do this in notepad or text edit.

Hey everyone! So I ran into a question when I went to review my application in FMS. In the Program Awareness Survey section I didn't come across a section for location preferences but when I went to review the application there was a space that listed "States and territories where you are willing to relocate" but it was blank. Has anyone else run into this problem?

Yeah I know what you mean, it seems like those sections use to be there but they decided not to ask anymore and never changed it when you go to review. I was concerned myself.

I also wasn't asked initially for geographic preference yet. It does say on the instructions for the personal statement that "Regional (location) preferences will be collected during the next phase of the process."

General question: I'm graduating with my MPH this semester and am also applying for other fellowships (that will let me know a lot earlier than August if I am selected). According to PHAP eligibility, "They also must have completed at minimum a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university within the previous two years or complete a four-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree by July 1, 2015."
Do I have until the 2017 application cycle to re-apply if I do another fellowship first?

Re: Location preferences

I did see on the initial USA jobs application that there was a slot to select location preferences. I didn't select anything because I made a mental note to "research some of the areas", then the deadline crept up on me and I ended up selecting nothing. Honestly, have been kicking myself a bit about it since then, even though I get varying responses on whether or not it actually matters.

I think, in previous years, there was an option to also select preferences in Phase II, which would explain why the fields are still on the application but not interactive.

What I am wondering... is if there will be any other chance to weigh in on where we might like to be placed, or if my time has already passed for that and I'm essentially rolling the dice.

Thoughts?

Does anyone have a rough idea how long it will take until we hear back about interviews? I was trying to gauge a timeline based on from the forum posts from last year.

As far as location preferences, I haven't seen anything yet..... But honestly, If I am afforded the opportunity, I will go anywhere!

Probably a good thing if the took it off the application, I don't think many people who didn't choose all states got where they wanted to be.

Did your application have different slots for each question? Because mine only had one box for all three questions...

So I submitted my PS in three section and have numbered them. Initially I had the questions followed by my responses but when i copy pasted them to the PHAP app, it said you are more than 250words blah blah... so I removed the question and just numbered the three sections. It looked a bit wierd but I couldnt think of any other way plus I didnt have any time left. Could you guys share what everybody did...

I had one box for all of the questions... It didn't even cross my mind to number the questions. I just wrote in the order of the questions but you can't distinguish the difference at a glance. However, I think it flowed well.. Or at least I am hoping so :) lol

Hi Everyone,
New to the forum. I submitted my Personal Statement yesterday. I am super excited but nervous at the same time. Good luck to everyone in the next phase.

Hi! I didn't number my sections. I just wrote them out, making sure they were under 250 then had transitions and flow to the next section. I think either way would be fine, especially because they didn't explicitly say what they wanted. Good luck!

I got a an email this morning with a rating. My rating was EL. Anyone know what that means? It only says "You are eligible for this specialty and grade".

Hello everyone! I just got my NOR and it says I'm eligible! There's no rating, just an EL. Anyone else hear back this round?

Hey Everyone,
I'm new to this thread! I also just received my "NORs" follow up email with a specific rating but couldn't locate the "EL" statement. Best of Luck to everyone!

I received the same email this morning. It seemed generic.... like anyone who completed the personal statement would get it. But, idk..... **fingers-crossed***

Hopefully the actually rating will be available soon!

I finally received an email with an eligible rating code, and my status on usajobs switched to reviewed-- "once my application is reviewed by a specialist I should receive further notification about my status." So for those who haven't heard back yet, we may still have hope :D Seems like everyone is on a little different time schedule.

Not everyone who applied via USA Jobs my year was eligible. For me the "EL" was at the bottom of the email from NOR and a second email a few hours later gave me my specific rating. I'm not sure what the eligible rating cut off is. After I submitted, I got an email from PHAP a couple of months later to complete the application.

I received the first email that said eligible. I just received a second email that stated i was referred and gave me a rating. I'm just going to keep my eye on the application status on the portal where we submitted our personal statements!

Hey, thanks for all your help. I received the eligible email today, but I was not requested to submit my personal statement last week. So, are there different rounds? Will I be asked to submit my personal statement or do you think the NOR EL email I received this morning was a fluke?

I wasn't asked to submit a personal statement though, this is all very confusing. I wonder if I'll be asked to submit a statement now?

I checked my USA Jobs application for clarification because I was confused by the emails I got. The first email said that my rating was EL and the second email gave me a numerical rating. The second email also said I was both referred and not-referred. However, my status on USA Jobs says referred. I was asked to submit /submitted a personal statement, so we'll see what happens next...

Since I'm just an associate, I'm not involved in the hiring process. My views and opinions are just my own, but I'm happy to help when I can.

I'm not sure how the application timeline is working this year, I'd go by this: http://www.cdc.gov/phap/become_associate/application_process.html
If I had to guess... I'd say that they'll get around to requesting personal statements from all applicants that were referred from the USA jobs application process. You could always contact them to make sure.

I also received an email this morning with an EL rating stating that I was "eligible for this specialty and grade" but when I checked USA jobs the status just says "reviewed." I was asked to proceed to the second round and submit the personal statement that was due on the 15th.

This is how it has gone for me thus far, and I hope this helps:

Jan 14 - I applied through USA jobs.
March 9- I received an e-mail saying I have been selected to move to the second phase. I was told to register and submit my personal statement.
March 15- I submitted my personal statement (the deadline was 3/15).
March 18- Receive a NOR saying ONLY that I am eligible for the position (Grade 05, Rating EL).

Current USA Jobs Application Status: Reviewed

That's all I have up until today. Can anyone shed some light on the numerical scoring (what is the average score of those offered an interview)?

The score is just used as a cutoff to be forwarded on in the application process. I have no idea what the cutoff is, but don't focus on the number as long as you were rated EL and referred on to the actual PHAP program for review.

Hey Everyone,
I have experience with HR and the rating you received was from the USAJOBS application and is completely separate from the FMS application. The score is most likely what they used to narrow down the people they were selecting to write a personal statement. I am pretty sure that all of the people who were selected to submit a personal statement were notified on March 9th. Just my opinion.

I am in the same situation. I received an EL status e-mail, but was not asked to complete a personal statement. I'd appreciate it if you keep me updated on what you receive/if you decide to call and ask them what's up.

Hey beerho, I will definitely keep you updated on what happens with my application. Please keep me up to date too!

I considered this and it seems like the most probable.

Hello all, I received an update today that was very confusing. I got the Notice of Results (NOR) today that said that I was eligible. Then I got the Letter of Referral that said my rating is 100. In the letter there is a portion that says my status is "Not Referred" and right under that it says that my status is "Referred". Mind you, I have already completed my personal statement and my PHAP application status says submitted.

I applied last year, so I went to USJOBS.gov to look at my old notifications to compare them. I made it to phase two as well last year with a rating of 95. The Letter of Referral was just as ambiguous. Is anyone else getting the same thing? I'm thinking the automated system that USAJOBS is delayed.

Reading is fundamental (I asked a question that you answered). Now I feel better about what I received.

______________________

Received the same email this morning also. The email was very confusing because there was a notification of NR and a notification R for myself. That's two different ratings in for one vacancy. I did a little research and found out that there was two certificates with canidates. One certificate I assume was for veterans and the other non-vet. So apparently I was referred on one cert. I had already ready received an e-mail directly from the program about being referred outside my Referral Letter. I am now currently a Fed employee, so this would be a downgrade for me in monetary terms. The previous forums have been pretty helpful. This forum has provided some clarity.... In a way I'm conflicted about this position, especially with the location selections. Then there is that wonderful opportunity this program will provide. I have no experience in public health but have always wanted to work in the field. I'm curious to what was considered high ratings ? I had a rating of 98. I did my personal statement this past Sunday. I notice people did narratives ??? I only had 3 questions. My statement was straight to the point. I hope it wasn't too short ?

I also received an NORs email this morning saying that my application status was updated to "reviewed" but that my rating was solely based on my responses.

So my current status is reviewed and my rating is EL, grade 05. For those of you who submitted a personal statement already though.. lnsertCoolName - you said you submitted a statement before you got the NORs? I haven't gotten any email yet about the second phase or an official rating. Seems that we are all on a different timeline, or I just didn't make it..

Best of luck to all of you in the second phase!

I just got my NOR and it says that my application has been reviewed and I am eligible.... I'm assuming I didn't get in due to other posts above. But it doesn't say my application is denied. Kind of confused here. Any one else have this?

The "grade 05" just refers to the payscale of the job. http://www.cdc.gov/phap/become_associate/faqs.html GS-05 the first year, then eligible for GS-07 the second.
