Reminder: match lists are advertisements.

MD/PhD graduates who failed to match (~5-10% nationally) won't be reported. Students who went to post-doc are often not reported. Students who matched as a prelim only are often reported ambiguously so that others will assume that they were categorical matches.

Some specialties such as Neurology have a prelim internship (elsewhere or at same location), but programs report the location for PGY-2+ residency . Some people are doing post-docs by choice, not because they are unmatched.

I've seen you mention this before, especially with reference to graduating classes from your alma mater. Is information on global MD/PhD performance in the Match available anywhere?

LSU-New Orleans:

Neurology - LSU New Orleans
Neurology - Baylor
Pathology - Emory
Plastic Surgery - SIU

What I posted about programs leaving graduates off their match lists, not reporting post-docs, and reporting prelim only matches as categorical, was communicated to me personally by an author of that study.

Just to add that I have seen all of these practices reflected in the match lists of very well regarded MSTPs.

Would you estimate maybe... 5-10% ? ;)
FWIW, our program has an unmatched rate of 1.4% over the past 10 years. There was no surprise at the non-matches (less-competitive individuals going after competitive specialties), and they matched in a different specialty the following year. In addition, 2.7% have declined to go through the match, and entered employment directly. All in this group made the decision at least 6 months prior to the match, having realized that they did not want to practice medicine. We have had no prelim-only matches in the past decade. We report all the postgraduate positions on our website, but do not differentiate between a non-matched individual and an individual who decided s/he did not want to do a residency. This is an n of 1, but I assume programs similar to ours would have substantially similar experiences.

Individuals who apply appropriately and have competitive stats (compared to MD only graduates) tend to match well. This is especially true if expectations are in line with reality, particularly in competitive specialties.

There is definitely a small but real proportion of people who forego internship/residency by design and an overlapping small proportion of people who don't match what they want. It can be very difficult to differentiate these two groups, and it's not in a program's best interest for you to be able to identify group 2, even if there are explanations. It just looks bad.
