Hello all,
I am applying to med schools this cycle and I would appreciate your input on my MD school list and my chances. Here are my stats and info:
Stats:
Asian, VA resident. Biology major, Psychology minor.
3.41 cGPA. 3.0 my freshman year, but consistent upward trend. Dean's list past 2 semesters.
3.51 sGPA
Taking MCAT on May 31. Scores on AAMC tests 3-11 are: 32, 31, 34, 33, 36, 33, 36, 36. All sections >10.
Extracurriculars:
Clinical Volunteering:
-300 hrs Scribe at a free clinic
-250 hrs Hospital ED + phys therapy volunteer.
Physician Shadowing:
-20 hrs Gastroenterologist
-20 hrs Orthopedic Surgeon
-12 hrs Family practice doc
-8 hrs anesthesiologist
Research:
-Summer research internships in 2009 and 2010. I know it's high school, but it can't hurt to put it on my app...right?
Non-Clinical Volunteering:
-1 year tutoring disadvantaged middle schoolers
Employment:
-Whitewater Raft Guide during summers in college-I'm including this in my app as a great leadership experience.
Clubs/Hobbies:
-Martial arts: 3 years Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing. 2 years Judo.
-Music: Piano since childhood, saxophone 2 years.
Med School List:
(IS) Eastern Virginia Medical School
(IS) Virginia Commonwealth U.
(IS) VTech-Carilion
Chicago-Rosalind Franklin
Cooper-Rowan
Drexel
Frank Netter
Hofstra
Michigan State University
New York Medical College
Rush
Tulane
University of Maryland
Vermont
Georgetown
Oakland
Loyola
USC Keck
Tufts
Wake Forest
Western Michigan
I'm mostly concerned about my below average GPA. According to the MSAR, it looks like I'm just above the 10th percentile GPA for most schools. The GPA/MCAT admissions statistics plots are just making me more worried. I'm guessing that I should apply to more schools. Any schools I should add to this list? Any to remove?
Thanks for your help.
