Honestly, you would probably be better off applying DO than SMP. I feel like your odds of getting accepted to medical school are better with it. Use DO grade replacement for your failed course.

Now, you should invest all yourr time into making your ECs stand out.

For OOS MD schools, consider Tulane, Creighton, St. Louis, Loyola, Rosalind Franklin. Western Michigan, Oakland Beaumont, GW, Georgetown, Drexel, Temple, Jefferson, Hofstra, Quinnipiac, New York Medical College, Albany, Penn State. You need more clinical exposure including shadowing and volunteering. Also apply to at least 10 DO schools and do some DO physician shadowing.

Thank you both for your input. I will likely spend my gap year being a scribe and undertaking other volunteer opportunities instead of doing a SMP.
