Hi Everyone,
I was hoping that I may get some advice from you guys. I am a Utah resident. I submitted my AMCAS application at the beginning of July so I should be verified soon and need to pick more schools to apply for. I have never spoken with a premedical advisor so I am really nervous about submitting (my campus does not have an advisor).
Research:
-1.5 years research in a synthetic organic chemistry research lab designing anti-cancer medications (I will continue working there until I *hopefully* move for medical school)
-I received two separate research grants for a total of $3000
-2 poster and 1 oral presentation
-I was recently awarded "Undergraduate Researcher of the Year" at my university (I believe I will receive a scholarship for this)
-My PI just submitted a manuscript to the Journal of Chemical Education and I am listed as the second author
Clinical Work/volunteer/shadow:
-Worked as a CNA for 8 months on an Alzheimer's wing (about 40hrs/week)
-Worked as an LPN for 1.5 years- after working for a while, I was able to work as a charge nurse
-Volunteer at my local hospital (100 hours)
-70 hours (total) shadowing general surgeon, family practice, OB, neonatologist, peds
Leadership:
-Served for 3 years in the Army as a nuclear, biological and chemical warfare specialist (no oversea tours)
-Student body government campus representative
-Co-founded and first president of first chemistry club

I am sorry that was incredibly long. There are a few other miscellaneous things that I have done, but this is the bulk of what was submitted on my AMCAS app. Also I applied as disadvantaged (grew up on welfare, SSI- Caucasian female).

Thus far I have only applied to Baylor and the University of Utah-I know that I have almost no chance of being accepted to Baylor, but it is my dream school. Can anybody tell me other MD schools that I may be competitive at? I apologize in advance for any spelling or grammar errors. Thanks again for all of your help!!

Hey We have really similar stats, but your EC's look great! I am also a Utah Resident and went to the U of U. Who was your PI? I am certain you would be competitive at several of the schools I have on my list. Check out my info and see my schools list post.

Hi!
I went to Utah State University (Uintah Basin campus) but am applying to the University of Utah :). My PI is Dr. Christiansen. Thanks! I will check out your school list. I am really hoping to get in somewhere.

VERY impressive packet! Even with the <avg MCAT score, I think you should aim high, so go for Baylor, and other medium-high tier schools.

Thank you so much for your encouraging words!!!! I really hope somewhere will take me, and I would absolutely LOVE it if I could even get an interview at Baylor.
How do I know which schools are OOS friendly? I have the MSAR and have been looking through it, but I can't tell how many people are accepted OOS and IS? Thank you again.

Check in the acceptance information section on the online MSAR. There are numbers for IS or OOS applicant, interview, matriculated for each school.

I see we have some similarities in out stats, I just wanted to ask if you had to list the classes you took to earn you LPN as part of your coursework in your application. I am sorry to be asking you a question instead of providing a helpful response, thank you.

I included all of my grades for my LPN program but I have no idea what AMCAS will do with them. I have not been verified yet, but I am curious to see how they will calculate the GPA. None of my classes were done as credit hours. For example, I had a foundations of nursing class that was worth 330 hours... I should be verified within the next 10 days (fingers crossed) and then I will have a better idea of whether they require these classes or not. In the meantime, I just played it safe and sent in my grades and transcripts.

Thank you, element50, for your advice. I will look through the MSAR to get a better feel for it.
