I am retaking my mcat because I do not want to rely on my URM for any acceptances and really believe I can do much better.

This is a good view to have, though you should be aware that a 25 is a fairly competitive score for your ethnicity (69th percentile).

A 29 would be 90th percentile, and may be a good goal as it is also roughly the average MCAT score for non-URM applicants. If not benefitting at all from your URM status is very important to you, you're looking at a 31-32. Keep in mind that medicals schools are giving you URM status not because of your skin color but because of your unique perspective and life story.

Everything else looks pretty good. Don't sweat getting a C in high school. If you're looking for something else to do, increase your hospital/autistic volunteering commitment a bit, but it's not necessary. Also, shadowing nurses/other medical specialists is generally not viewed as equivalent to shadowing physicians.

Can anyone give me some feedback? I am a black Puerto Rican moved to the US when I was 9. I have a 3.7 (Would be higher but transferred a C from high school biology course. Only A's in college biology courses) GPA with a 25 MCAT (9V, 9BS, 7 PS). I certainly felt like I did better in my BS section but scores didn't report that. Retaking MCAT and hoping for 28+. Texas resident.

-I have more than 400 hours of research in both biochemistry and microbiology
-Medical Mission trip to south america (Translated between the patients and health professionals)
-Other mission trips in the states and mexico (all throughout junior high, high school, and now college)
-300+ Hours of shadowing (nurses and different specialty physicians in OR)
-Working as a student advisor
-Taking care of autistic children for a foundation while parents had counseling. (10 hours-current)
-Hospital Volunteer (30 hours)
-Member of Rugby League (6 months, out because of injury during school)
-Member of Latin dancing teaching company (1 year)
-Non-clinical community service (50-100 hours)
-Three 5K races (love running with music)
-Fluent in both English and Spanish
-Intramurals (Soccer and In-door Volleyball for two years.)
-Dean's least all throughout college.

Please give me some feedback. I am retaking my mcat because I do not want to rely on my URM for any acceptances and really believe I can do much better. I am not worried for I will retake as many times possible during this year in order to get it. I have also shadowed DO's and not really looking towards that route. Have received advise from them, that more doors are open for MD's at the time and they don't truly get to practice their special training in musculoskeletal practice. Not planning on returning to study to PR, only to visit my family when available.

Check out meharry and Howard both are Mds. Apply to all Texas schools (including Tcom)

Tbh Texas and urm is gold but 25 is lethal so a retake is a good idea. But you can probably make due with what you have now. As far as the do slight that was unnecessary. All the doors open to mds are open to dos but you just might have to pull slightly harder. Honestly though dos can do any speciality mds can.

Thank you for your responses and input, I will certainly apply them and hopefully increase my mcat scores to better my chances. I will also continue volunteering and increase my experiences in the health care field.

DoctorSynthesis: Sorry if I came out the wrong way. I do respect DO's and believe they can achieve the same standing as MD. I am hopeful that the discrepancy between the two fields diminish in the near future, but I was merely stating the opinions of two D.O. physicians that I could guess were not as happy with their careers. Nevertheless, the angle of approach they take when caring for a patient is something to be admired but it is not for everyone. An aspect that I plan to incorporate into my studies and practice in my future health care career.

Hi Angel252, when exactly do you plan on retaking?

Because the earlier you send in your app the better. However, take all the time you need to prepare for the MCAT so you can knock it out the park this time around. I think you are in good shape otherwise. Come back and update us when you get your MCAT score and we will help you come up with a good school list. Good luck on the retake :luck:

Will do!! Thank you for your response! ;) Do you think it would be a good idea to submit then update or wait for my new scores?

Depends on what your practice scores are like to be honest. How have you been doing lately?

Where did you get the percentiles for MCAT scores by race/ethnicity from? I don't see them on the AAMC site.
