So I did something stupid and took my second quarter of organic chemistry Pass/No Pass and didn't realize it until I saw my grades this week (I passed). I didn't change it at all during the quarter and I must have slipped up and marked it as pass/np when I was registering for classes but I have no idea why I would've done that as the default option is a Letter grade and I had no intention to ever take the class pass/np.

I don't really know how to proceed right now as my options from what I've gathered over the last two days are:

1. Petition for a change on my transcript to a grade (This is very unlikely to happen unless I had some sort of emergency)
2. Ask my teacher to change my grade down to a No Pass (NP) on my transcript and retake the course.
3. Take an additional quarter of organic chemistry at the local community college.

My question is if anyone else has ever experienced this and if I do have to change my grade to a NP and retake it, how would it look on my transcript.

Right now I'm looking at a 3.66 and it's going up and I have a ton of EC's and experience to supplement my app. I'd hate to have this one momentary split up really knock me off the path or dock me.

As for what I would've gotten in the class if I had taken it for a letter grade, I'm pretty sure I was looking at a straight B but there's a slim chance I got a C. However I don't know since the professor doesn't post the final score online.

Advice or suggestions on how to proceed?

So I guess the answer is school specific. You should bring up this issue to professor/adviser/administration to see if anyone has been in your situation previously.

They may make some kind of exception if you go and talk to the prof of even the dean of your college or head of the program. I would be curious to hear how they respond.

If your letter grade would not have been an A, you might want to just leave the P on your transcript and take the class again to try for the A.

Agree with this. Unless you've taken all your other pre-reqs and aced them (ie this would be your only B), this seems like a pretty fortuitous second chance.

I was admitted to a school without ever having taken Org 2 at all. They just stipulated that I have to take it before matriculation, and I'm wrapping up the course now. If they really want to see a grade in it, they can just make that a condition of your acceptance.

Much of my coursework was taken at a school that only offers P/NP, and this caused me no difficulty, even though some of the required courses for my school were graded on a P/NP basis.

If this is the only problem with an otherwise strong app, you are going to be just fine. If you are sitting on an app with lots of problems, it would be easiest to clear this one up by taking the class over at a community college or via UNECOM online. I'm doing their online course and it was really great to be able to knock out several chapters (weeks) worth of material in a weekend because I was already familiar with it. My Org 1 prof really went overboard, and packed close to two terms into one. Nothing like being able to finish a 16 week course in less than 6.

Would an adcom look at it unfavorably if I took the course at another state college / community college / online versus where I go (currently at a UC [university of california])? I don't think I'll be able to keep the P on the class and also retake the course. I will need to ask for a fail to retake it at my school.

Don't ask for a fail. Can you make up for it by taking another o.chem course? If you take an advanced upper-level o.chem, would AMCAS accept that in light of O. Chem 2?
