Will it affect Juniper in any way if I switcher her from free feeding to a 2x a day feeding schedule for a couple months? Just until the foster cat goes back home.
She might be a little mad at you at first but she'll adjust. I did that with mine because I had to make sure Cindy wasn't getting into Gandalf's food. They adjusted really quickly, though they are more likely to wake me up in the morning now.

Does anyone have experience with Betta fish fin rot or tail biting? I'm trying to determine which of the two is going on...

Hi all, I have a question about my rabbit and am hoping the collective knowledge of SDN can help me out. He's seven years old, always been healthy except for some skin issues (possibly fungal, on his back a few years ago), but developed this lump on his right temple about 3 months ago. At first it looked just like a wart or skin tag, but it grew very rapidly and unevenly, sometimes it was light-colored and others dark. I had my employer do a cytology and she found some bacterial cells (she didn't believe she found any cancerous cells), so we did a round of Baytril to no effect. Now, she's not an exotics specialist and does almost exclusively dogs and cats, so she admits she could have missed something someone more familiar with rabbits would have found. I was going to watch it for a bit, but the other day it either popped, or he scratched it and shook his head around, because I found blood splattered on the wall, and which is why it looks all scabby now (I had cleaned it with chlorhexidine, which is why it's wet). Can anyone more familiar with rabbits/weird lumps help me out with what it might be? I do want to take him to an exotics vet, but I'm moving in a couple of weeks and he's staying home with my parents, so I just wanted to get an idea of what it is before I go.

Take to an exotics vet. Two weeks is plenty of time to make an appointment.

Hi all!! Curious if anyone of you current vet students have been able to scrub in on a total elbow replacement using the TATE implant? I was curious to hear your opinions on not only the procedure but overall pain relief post operatively and recovery times.

This is Corky my service dog. He's a good boy and does quite a bit for me.

1. Just chillin' at the gym with his kicks because it's hot here in AZ.

2-3. At home with his prized Bunny. When I graduated the service dog training, his puppy raiser gave me Bunny and said "This was his first toy, he hasn't seen this in a year and I'm not sure he'll remember it." Oh, he did. He'll destroy any other toy but he just suckles on this thing for hours on end. His eyes gloss over when he does it to, it's like a drugJust got it re-stuffed by the lady who hems my jeans because he suckled Bunny so much it was partially decapitated.

My bottle baby is all grown up! Here he is a little dopey after his first vaccine.

I'm scared he's going to be one of those nasty bottle babies. He seems to enjoy biting my fingers and face. :(

Juniper knocked some extra of her cat food off of my desk, now my printer is jammed with kitten chow -_-

I took this picture shadowing at the vet today, I thought it was pretty funny:

"Why does he get to lay on the floor while I'm stuck in this cage!?"

We had a cat named Juniper. When she died we gave our daughter Juniper as a middle name. (She was born 2 weeks later.)

This is my Brown Swiss, Vivienne, because there are not enough cows on here! Or not, too big... I'm not tech savvy enough to know how to fix that from a smart phone... :(

She's most adorable when she's looking up at you with those soulful brown eyes asking for her chin to be scratched and her chin has gone slack in anticipation so you can see her bottom row of chiclet teeth and then her eyes slowly close with pleasure as you dig your fingers into the soft velvet of her dewlap neck flap.

That or when she plays chase in the pasture with my husband and I.

We lost our mastiff mix last year and she's kind of our replacement "puppy"

Our oldest dog is turning 13 tomorrow. I'm happy but also pretty depressed just thinking about how old she is.

Found out on facebook that her brother died about a month ago so who knows how much longer we have with her. On top of that we're entering her in a show (a veterans class--for the old dogs) in October and it's weird to think that it's entirely possible she might not even be alive in October. She's in the oldest age category now!

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing actually specifically wrong with her health at this point but her age definitely shows and you never know when things could take a sharp turn for the worse. Every day is really a blessing right now.

<3 our old lady.

I never said that it was.
you just stated that you're essentially waiting for her to keel over at any moment because she's 13 (and not because she's in poor health). that seems a little discriminatory to me...statistically it makes some terminal disease more likely, but theres no reason that she cant be 14 or 15 or however old she will be! i just had this talk with a client today, who was worried that if we thought her cat was x years old, we would tell her all hope was lost and that we wouldnt do anything for her pet. made me very sad (but very happy to tell her thats not true!)

That's not what I said at all.

She's not in poor health but she has slowed down a lot over the past year. She has some arthritis and cataracts and hearing loss. I can look at her and see that she's not quite the same dog she was. She could easily live several more years but she also might die tomorrow.

Her brother died a month ago of no apparent cause, he was in roughly the same condition as my girl. It's what we pet people generally refer to as "dying of old age" but I'm sure you don't like that phrasing since age is not a disease... so yeah, that made me painfully aware that my time was her is limited. Acknowledging that my dog is going to die and being kind of sad about is not the same as "waiting for her to keel over any moment".

If I was waiting for her to die any moment I wouldn't be dropping the money to enter her in a show 2 months from now. Sure, I said it was entirely possible she might not be alive then... but entirely possible is not equivalent to very likely. I absolutely expect that if nothing changes in her health that I will be able to proudly exhibit her in that veterans ring.

Even though I have some sadness about her age I also stated I was happy--in fact ecstatic that my girl is 13 years old. I've had this dog in my life for 11 years and I could not be happier about that.

Honestly, I only wish that I was this aware of my limited time when she was younger. I was just a kid when we brought her home and like a lot of kids I wasn't thinking about the fact that she wouldn't be around for ever. This dog has been around for over half my life and I don't think I ever appreciated her quite like I do now. That is what I was getting at.

Problem Dog decided to eat a corn cob yesterday. It's a good thing my senior is a mean hand with a scope.

Any dog ever could die at any moment. Who knows? Maybe there were signs the brother had that people just didn't notice or attributed to "old age" and didn't take him to the vet for. Maybe they thought he wasn't getting up due to arthritis but he was lethargic. Or something. Dying of old age is something that comes from an era before we started to understand organ failure and cancer.

I know that.

I don't know how to better express what I was trying to say so I'm not going to keep trying to correct it.

Suffice to say, my dog is 13 today. Kind of feels bittersweet. That's all I really originally intended to say.

Used too many words, got myself into a mess.

I just wanted to clarify why dying of old age is a misnomer. I get that it is bittersweet to have a senior pet. But being clued in to behavior changes makes it much less likely for them to suddenly die.

Is massive the only image size here? I can for the life of me figure out a way to resize anything. *sigh*

And by the way, reading my posts back they sound kind of short and cranky. I really didn't mean for it to come across that way if it did.
Someone needs to revoke my internet privileges after 10 PM (and especially after midnight) ;)

She's beautiful :) if you want to resize the images (though they look fine to me and aren't too big for my tablet to handle) you can try using something like pixlr to do it manually, or texting/emailing them to yourself which should do it automatically.

Wow she's beautiful! And definitely doesn't look 13, lucky girl!

Thanks! It doesn't bother me enough to resize them... actually the more I look at them the less massive they seem.

Thank you! She does look really good for her age. My mother and I were just saying as we were taking the pictures that if she looks like this in two months then she should do very well at the show (our national). Veterans is one of my favorites events and I'm glad to have the opportunity to take her. I swear I might be one of those people who starts bawling like a baby if she wins anything big though.

Gave my one piggy a butt bath today because she likes to sit in the litter box and sometimes gets a little gross. It must have been itchy because as I was cleaning her, she started nibbling on everything..well the towel fell off my arm and she nailed me on my forearm. It's a solid inch of a bite mark and will likely leave a bruise.

And I'm going to have to go back to crating my dog it appears. He's eaten 2.5 bags of piggy treats, open and chewed on a piggy hay carrot that was stashed behind two boxes under a table and started raiding trashcans again -- none of which have any food wrappers or anything in them. Not sure what's gotten into him, but I'm done with walking into my room filled with wrappers of thing sand waiting for a potential foreign body.

I have three very tiny house guests for the weekend! Momma is here too, but doesn't seem to be lactating. Babies names are Polliwog, Kermit and Tadpole (in that order). Tadpole is the weakest and we're keeping our fingers crossed that he lives, though he had gotten stronger since Wednesday when we got them.

Babies! I love babies. <3

I can't wait to have some babies, until then I shall be extremely jealous of you.
Best wishes to Tadpole!

How old are they?

We suspect they are about 7 days old. It's hard to tell because they can't open their eyes due to URI's. Polli is just starting to stumble around, but Tadpole is still unable to crawl. Babies can be fun, but they are a lot of work too!

Fall is coming!

aka annual itchy paw season for my dog :(

BABIESSS! super cute. and I love your nail polish!

I don't know how it happened but it seems like my kitteh's behavior is regressing. Now he likes to run after us and jump on our legs. Thankfully he's pretty gentle so he still hasn't broken my skin, but it freaks my sister out. He's always liked chewing on socks (especially when they are on feet) but yesterday he just attacked my foot while I was petting him even though I wasn't wearing socks. And I just can't figure out why he's started doing this stuff. He was such a well-behaved kitten...

Is he polyphagic for a veterinary reason perhaps? Not that I would ever give medical advice on SDN, of course :)

Not that I can think of because he doesn't really have any other clinical signs or compulsive behaviors. He just had his annual visit with bloodwork (just cbc/chem/ua) and that was all normal. It's definitely something I've considered though. He's been on a weight management program for a year and now that we're at a good weight I'm going to try switching him off it and just feed him his required calories and try to add more things like carrots and see if that helps. If not, I'll get him rechecked.

And now we have moved onto chewing actual things...like my fitbit. It's been in the exact same spot for at least a month (and kind of tucked away) with no issues previously. I feel like it has to be the beginning of separation anxiety but he doesnt vocalize, have accidents or freak out when I leave. He also hasn't been crated for over a year so I'm not sure why this is an issue all of a sudden.

I'm considering interactive toys if anyone has recommendations for any for a dog that doesn't really play with toys to begin with. I already have a Kong and he has a few bones but he's historically not been a big chewer.

My dog doesn't play much except for chew toys (she isn't one to roll around balls unless I throw them, she doesn't like soft toys, and so on), but really likes the puzzle feeder I got her. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=22476 The only issue I have with it is that I can't set it up and leave, or she'll chew it up while I'm gone.

Ugh, good thoughts for my puppies please? We lost one today and the cause is undetermined. We're watching the others very carefully. They've been seen by a vet and all appear in good health... but so was the one we lost. Not a happy camper right now. :(

Tadpole passed away this morning. He seemed to have gotten a little stronger, but then he tanked overnight. :(

And so sorry to hear this. How are the others?

Sometimes they just don't do well. Look up fading puppy syndrome

Yeah, it's just generally with a fading puppy there are some signs they're not doing well before you lose them. This guy was seemingly healthy one minute and dead the next.
The other three are still alive and well though so hopefully it was just a weird thing that happened to him and not something that will affect the whole litter.

it's likely not the whole litter. there was likely a congenital defect somewhere with that specific puppy. I would be surprised if any other puppies didn't do well.
