Personally, when I read a passage loaded with jargon, be it philosophical, economical, or political, I get lost trying to find the main idea. Most of the verbal passage improvement comes form ascertaining the main idea. But, if vocabulary impedes the ability to acquire the main idea, then learning basic technical words might provide some assistance to understanding those very abstract passages.

When I review a passage I bomb, I have a dictionary handy and then I am able to understand it better after learning the vocab AAMC apparently thinks we already are familiar with. For example, in one passage I was absolutely lost because of the constant use of the verb evanesce in describing Monet's Impressionist style.

So, I plan to improve my glossary by visiting a few links below to get a better feel for some words. I don't suggest memorizing the words, but reading them to get a feel for them. This might be better than just perusing through the Economist or related literature. Although the occasional grammatical flourish confuses me, its usually the jargon that gets me lost.

Anyone have any input for this?
