I'm an MSTP wrapping up my PhD and planning on returning to the wards in January. I wanted to get opinions on how much of a disadvantage I'd be in if I came back in January 2015 and applied in August 2015. I would have grades for Peds, FM, Surg, Med, and either Obgyn or Psych/Neuro in time for ERAS and still do sub-internship and 1 away during the summer. The rest of my application is competitive (high boards, pubs, etc). My other option is coming back in May of 2015 and delaying my application 1 year so I can have all of my grades and more opportunities for oto research. Thanks for your input.

Shouldn't be much of a problem. The PhD is a good mark. Make sure you do Medicine and Surgery and honor those. Honor your ENT rotation. Get good letters. Your PhD gives you an advantage, but not if your grades and LORs are average or below average.

Hopefully that PhD got you some relevant pubs.
