I have recently been selected for a couple of Army Dental Residency Programs and was wondering what the chances are that I will get one of my top three spots in them? I am finishing up school now on HPSP and was accepted to AEGD-1 and OMFS - Having accepted both of them I am just wondering where they may put me. Any information that anyone has is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

That is highly variable. It all depends on the priorities of all the people applying, seniority, family needs, etc. There is no definitive answer anyone will be able to give you on that....as it varies with everyone.

You can accept both? How does that work?

I also accepted 1 yr AEGD and OMFS. You are pulled out of the AEGD 6-8 weeks early to start the traditional residency. You will not receive a certificate of completion for the AEGD until successful completion of the first semester of of traditional residency.

Wow did not know you can do that. Maybe that's why so many students are having a hard time getting an AEGD-1 spot.

OMFS has residencies in DC, Ft. Gordon, Ft. Bragg, Ft. Bliss, Tripler, Ft. Lewis (you can google search to see where those places are). AEGD has locations in Ft. Campbell, Ft. Jackson, Ft. Sill, Ft. Carson, Ft. Lewis, Ft. Benning

My recommendation is not to take both for the following reasons:

1) Seems like a shame for you to accept both when you are taking an AEGD spot from someone who could better capitalize on the training that a 1 yr AEGD will provide. The 1 yr AEGD will make them a better general dentist or help improve their chances of getting selected for a specialty...neither of which would benefit you.

2) Doing the 1 yr AEGD will cause you to incur an additional year of your payback to the Army...for what? You are going into OMFS and are already slotted, why go to one base for 9-10 months and then move to the next location for the OMFS program? It seems more productive and less stressful to move to the base you will do OMFS in and get settled and start the program that following year. What do you ultimately gain from the experience?

I could not agree more with everything you have said krmower. I know the current 1st year in OMS at my base, enjoyed his "snow bird" year quite a bit before starting residency. He also was able to work it out so that he was often doing exodontia and 3rds (often 6+ cases/week) in his clinic. I completely disagree with the notion that a 1 yr AEGD will give you more exodontia experience. The AEGD is split among all the specialties. At most bases, you will do primarily operative + 1 or 2 other specialist procedures (depending on the OIC of the clinic of course). The upcoming OMS resident decided to take a 1 year AEGD spot instead, in the hopes of getting more OMS experience. Unfortunate that he probably won't get more exodontia experience than the current 1st year. Additionally it will be stressfull for him to PCS again. Inprocess, again into the base and DENTAC and then inprocess into the hospital. Afterward, 15 hour work days as an OMS resident commence for the next 4 years.
