Interested MS1 here. While doing some web surfing the other day, I came across several public media articles like these
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/15/h...give-limited-vision-to-blind-people.html?_r=0
http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/bionic-eye-helps-blind-man-article-1.1766538
Some more reading has shown that there are several groups both private and academic which are attempting to develop advanced artificial retinas. I realize that the technology has a long way to go, and that it is only currently approved for retinitis pigmentosa, but I was curious how people who are more in touch with the retinal field view this development. Do you see the implantation of these devices becoming a mainstay of retinal surgery, or will this just remain an academic or luxury pursuit?
I should also mention that I realize it won't replace your standard lineup of injections, OCT, FA, and surgeries for retinal detatchments. Just want to see how others view this.
