Hello everyone!! I'm only a little over halfway through my sophomore year of high school. Over the past year or so I've grown very interested in the medical field, especially anaesthesiology. Freshman year I took all honors level courses and made the honor roll all year. This year I'm taking all honors level courses again, as well as an AP history class (the only AP course offered to sophomores at my school). I've gotten all As and Bs this year as well, except for the first term of Algebra 2 I got a C+. Sciences and maths aren't necessarily my BEST subjects, but I still typically fall into the B+/A- range in these classes. Now I KNOW it's too soon to tell but I am always thinking about my future and I'm a big dreamer so I couldn't help but try to ask someone who is experienced in this field; Do you think I'm at least on the right track to major in some sort of science and hopefully move on to med school?

Love the enthusiasm. No need to worry about med school for now. Let alone which specialty you want. Just focus on getting into college first, then majoring in something you enjoy (which will make it more likely you'll get a strong GPA). It doesn't have to be science. You just need to do your pre-med courses and get a strong science GPA. Then do well on the MCAT. If you enjoy it, you could ask about doing some research with a professor you get along with, just to whet your appetite and get some letters of reference for med school. Keep dreaming big, and good luck!

The fact that you are so focused and already have career goals at this early stage is very encouraging. The good news is that there is absolutely nothing that you can't achieve if you want it bad enough.

Aw, give him a break, guys. You were young once, too.

OP, if your heart's set on medicine, study hard, keep your GPA up, but keep your humanity as well. Don't let the educational rat race make you into a robot.

For HS: study hard, take AP science/math courses, keep gpa up. Score well on SAT/ACT. Scout out universities you want to go to that have scholarships. Partake in extracurriculars. You are only young once.

For college: major in whatever you want. There will be a pre-med "curriculum" to follow, and you will likely get a major or minor from those courses. But if there's something else you like - aviation, history, whatever, pursue it. Adding an extra year to learn more is not going to hurt you. Travel. Travel. Travel. Get a job, any job, for the experience of having a job. Partake in some legit volunteer work. Spend time with friends, because that's over in med school. Keep up your grades. Score well on the mcat.

This is not new advice, though. Tl;dr work hard, play hard.

:smack: at the responses in this thread.

1) moving to the HS forum

2) try not to be such jerks to visitors

I was actually surprised; the only jerky response was from the Jerk-in-Chief himself.

It was the 5 likes to the post that made my rolling eyes hurt.
At least we know there are 5 normal people reading this thread.

May I ask what made you aspire to become an anaesthiologist? Have you shadowed/volunteered for one? If not, how do you know that becoming one "fits" you? About, 90% of medical students change their specialty in medical school when they start doing rotations with specialists. Cheers.
