Black premeds/doctors around?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, need your advice. Just got into a research summer program at a great med school and an almost full scholarship to intensive summer Haitian Creole program. Supposed to start my formal post-bac this summer too (I think I can take gen chem 1 and 2 online and take labs during winter break). I'm also working 42 hrs a week as an EMT.

I know I can't do it all, but I really really want to learn Haitain Creole. I mean, I'm half-Haitian. Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats to all those accepted to med school this fall. So proud. Much love.

Which med school you got accepted to?
Congrats on everything!

It's a research program at one of the medical schools in Chicago. I'm still pre-med, but thanks!

I find it strange that people like beyonce and others dont get the same reception with the fact they process their hair or bleach it blonde . Isn't it all the same thing ??

Also queen B also gone through here lightening phase and no one bats an eye

Doesn't skin bleaching cause permanent damage?! I've having a hard time believing those pictures weren't photoshopped. Say it ain't so, Lil' Kim!

Are there skin bleaching specialists? Dermatologists you can go to?! I thought that was illegal in the USA.

HA HA HA There is alot of products sold in brooklyn can do it. I dont doubt alot of celebs have better less dangerous methods of doing it.. And my question is why everyone ganging up on her. Alot of celebs lighten there skin.. Beyonce been rumored to do it as well (they even have products named after her lol) . But since she is the Queen B I guess she escapes alot of the criticism... I think everyone is free to do with their body what they want.

Are people even criticizing Kim? I thought we were focused on how white supremacy, white beauty standards and colorism has caused these changes.

Yeah but if we want to have a intellectual honest discussion we should also discuss that with women who process/strighten their hair or black women who bleach their hair blonde. Just find it strange we find one thing to highlight beauty standards and wont bat an eye to the others because they have become the norm. Women still feel they need to "de-kink" their hair to look attractive

But I think we should ask why they feel they have to do that. Of course if people are completely comfortable with themselves and they just want to look different, then it's cool I suppose.

But, I was asking you about where you heard people criticizing lil Kim because I haven't heard anyone do that.

Thats the point . Everyone saying how sad it is that she is going through all that. But we dont bat a eye to the other things black women do to fit beauty standards that make them look more white

Yeah but you have to ask why. That's what I'm saying. People don't just feel inherently ugly. I think society has brainwashed people into thinking that White is prettier and maybe that's why women who aren't white make these changes to look Whiter. So that's why I think it's sad. Who told these women they weren't amazing and beautiful?

Just wanted to say Goodbye y'all...

SDN is racist and banned me from the social/support/sociopolitical forums for no reason, well I guess for my own protection?

Anyone, keep doing you. I'm proud of you and I'm rooting for you. I don't want to be on this site anymore. It's toxic.

I wrote about it on the URMs in healthcare forum:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/leaving-sdn-separate-but-not-equal.1196159/
Is this link not working anymore?

@Angelyka Oh no, I am being censored yet gain by the people in power. Watch the following posts be taken down or "awaiting moderation."

We wouldn't want Black people getting "woke" or having equal rights, now would we?

Anyways, like I said, I wish you guys all the best. It's time for me to exit this cesspool. This site's threads and comments, the mean users on this site, and the way I've been treated have proven Huffpo's claims, racism is rampant in health care. And it's sad and I'm sickened to my stomach.

Go, make this world a better place, y'all. Seriously, we need more URM doctors. Way too much ignorance and hatred out there.

I'm really sorry to hear that. That is why I no longer engage in URM threads or in the SSS lounge. You can fight tooth and nail with these people but at the end of the day no real change occurs. I believe these kinds of dialogues must be done in person or else you are essentially talking to a brick wall. SDN is not and never will be a true representation of people in medicine..

(hugs Thanks @PREMEDitated22)

The problem with hypocrites, is that they're all about the Constitution and free speech except when it comes to the minority. Who happen to be minorities. None of what I posted was inflammatory or "disruptive," except possibly defending myself against the mob jumping me.

I cannot believe that self-proclaimed Ethnic Nationalist is not permanently banned. Frankly it should have happened long ago.
In fact, if I got "uppity" it was because I was like :wtf:over the regulars' defense of him posting the offensive video (that thankfully was taken down). Empathy for others with darker melanin is sorely lacking in many users on this site.

Nothing ever changes, you're right, but silence, silencing dissension, or agreeing with the majority just to have internet friends is condoning (and believing in) coded hate speech and thinly veiled bigoted views. I guess I'm just a naive idealist and thought all voices matter.

Guess not. In any case, feel free to PM me. Maybe I'll check in on this thread from time to time. Haven't decided yet, this ish is raising my BP.

There is a huge difference between condoning hate speech, and demonstrating wisdom about when/where you can actually make a difference. As one of the only minority attendings who posts regularly (not to mention one of the only OB/GYNs), I'm not interested in sacrificing my ability to advise and mentor on SDN, just to be right on the Internet. My ignore list is lengthy. And the Lounge is a waste of time that (IMHO) really shouldn't be part of these forums anyway.

It serves its purpose. Keeps the garbage out of the rest of the forum. Every place needs their dumping ground for social and other nonsense threads, because as long as there are people, there will be a desire for them to do more than talk shop.

Eh, I contribute to some other forums that simply overcome the issue with more strict moderation. You want to do more than talk shop, you go elsewhere. Admittedly, it's hard to achieve that kind of thing with such a broad spectrum of members, but I think it'd be doable on SDN if the admins chose that path. They don't want to, which is their prerogative. I just think that on a special interest site, it's not ideal when a new person is poking around looking at new posts, and the majority of topics that come up first have zero to do with the purpose of the site. But I'm not in charge.

Yea, I gave up on those arugments months ago. It's sooo much of a wast of time.

I agree. It's learning how to chose your battles and unfortunately, over the internet is not one of them...

Big Brother is prolly watching me too, but Idgaf. Don't let them silence you. Your voice is a powerful one in a scarcity of URMs physicians and premeds. You have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share to those aspiring to become health-care professionals. Haters gonna hate. Don't let it change who you are or what value you add.

@Just1voice *hugs* Thank you guys for the support and love.

@22031 Alum and other physicians, residents, and medical students, maybe we could wake up the URMs in Health Care Forum?

Certain forums in other sections of SDN have threads entitled "Ask user X anything."

Mentorship matters. It's easy to hide URM status behind avatars so I honestly didn't know who might be willing to share a perspective and knowledge I could relate to. Just a suggestion. :nurse:

Also, I am well aware URMs are Latino/Hispanic, Native American, some Asians, Africans, and the disabled.

Look, not really trying to come at your neck but you do a lot on these forums. You're the same one who posted a thread that got closed about hating white people. I completely agree with trying to make people aware of the social injustices that exists not only in healthcare but in our society at large, but you come off as very abrasive. You can't hope to reach anybody if they feel like you're attacking them and being aggressive. They automatically close their ears and their minds to the message you're trying to get across.

Second, theses forums are really not the place to try and battle social injustice. There's so much anonymity on this site and no real investment or incentive for people to listen closely enough to change their ways. You take the comments personal and amass this grand retaliation that doesn't help your case at all. Therefore, you're wasting your breath. If you really want to start changing opinions, get involved in the real world. Leave these ignorant fools on the website. You're not doing anything but stressing yourself out trying to get through to people that you can't even directy have discourse with.

I agree with and admire your passion but channel it towards something else that's worth your time because theses forums aren't.

@teeayejay I will admit earlier I was very angry and came off as abrasive and aggressive. I don't know if it was my female time  (for reals, my friends and family run for the bunkers when it's that time for me) or if I was just going through a phase. I took some time off and Idk, maybe those talks with God helped, but I am back to my "I love everyone" usual self. I regret making that thread. I really do.

I do a LOT in the real world when I'm not on here and I feel I am making a difference. I don't feel like my recent threads/posts were attacking but I don't know if you read them, because I didn't see you on there.

I appreciate the real talk. But I also think that the internet does have the ability to fuel certain mindsets. Dylan Roof's ideas were cemented by his time on the internet and many jihadists become radicalized by getting together with those with similar thought processes on the internet.

I don't want SDN's SPF to become that, and to ban the minority voice (I could be wrong, but I am not sure there are many other URMs giving their opinions in the SP forum) seems to be giving the majority, many of whom hold interesting and uninformed beliefs, free reign to infiltrate people's hearts and minds without a balanced viewpoint from someone different.

Yea, I guess I'm just one of those people that can get really frustrated about the fact that I know I can't do much on these forums and I hate to see other folks frustrated too.
