Can I get into a podiatry school?

Or is there a better chance at DO schools?

if you apply early enough you may have a shot at podiatry. your gpa and m cat scores are too low for do school.

I think my choice was MD>DPM>DO. Even the MD I was a little sketch because I don't want to score bad on a step exam, and be relegated to PCP. At least as a POD I know exactly where my focus is, and its da.mn interesting.

I have been reading threads, and articles on podiatry for months, and came to the conclusion that its a great field if you want to be a specialist and have surgical training.

I have 3.7 science gpa, and i think a 3.2 overall gpa and a 22 mcat. I think this is the route I will peruse moving forward.

From my research I believe I will be some what competitive.

OP,

I would say that there is very little chance for you to be accepted into a DO program with your academic scores. I know an individual accepted to Ross with a 21, but bless his heart he works so hard. While you do shadowing, you should maybe think about doing some sort of postbac work. For pod school, your GPA and MCAT are both below average.

Yeah. I'm basically learning about the application processes today after receiving my MCAT score.

I'm looking into Ohio College because it's the closest school to where I live. I saw that the deadline for the Fall 2012 entrance was June 30th, is that how it is for the other 8 or so Pod Schools? Do I apply with my AAMC ID or do I have to create a new profile? What's the easiest Pod School to get into? And which should I be aiming at realistically with my scores?

I know that you said to apply early, is it too late to apply now? Or would there still be a chance of getting in somewhere?

to OG poster I don't think the mcat 21 score is the hurdle, I'm sure plenty people get into schools with a 21. I think the science gpa might be the dead weight a bit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 6 in the Biological Sciences means you're around the bottom 20% of all those who take the MCAT. That PLUS the low science GPA has to give adcoms a pause. You can fix the first by retaking the MCAT and the second by strong postbac work.

1 Most pod schools close their admissions for the SAME year around May/June (ie apply today, start classes in three months). I'm explaining this because you used the word "was" june 30th, as if it were LAST June 30th, which is not the case.

2 Your AAMC ID does not work for pod schools, and the application is through AACPMAS.

3 The easiest pod schools to get into are all of them. Seriously.

4 You've already taken the MCAT, so I don't know why you're wondering what scores to shoot for. I honestly think that if you apply in 2 months at the beginning of August, you'll get in.

5 No.

6 Applying early = apply in August/September. Today is probably the latest you could conceive of applying, and you will not get in unless you have very competitive stats - which you do not.

If you don't mind me asking, is this in the range you were scoring on AAMC practice tests (if you took them)? Or Kaplan, or any practice test really? Or was it out of the blue?

I take the MCAT in something like 22 days, so I want to know if these things happen, of if your FLs were pretty good at indicating your score.

If you apply today, you'd be applying to start school in two months. From my post, "ie apply today, start classes in three months"

I don't think you'd get into any of them. Also from last post: "Today is probably the latest you could conceive of applying, and you will not get in unless you have very competitive stats - which you do not." AACPMAS can take up to 5 weeks to process your application, so... there is a chance they can't even process your app in time, let along your below-average stats weighing against you.

I agree with AB. If you apply very early in the application cycle, you have a shot at getting in. Right now, there are a LOT of applications for only a few seats. The standards have risen strictly by increased demand of seats. Like andrew3 stated, you would have quite a bit of competition.

It's either a typo or wishful thinking. "Acceptable" is what they call a 22, yet their school average is also a 22... hmmm they both can't be true!

(I'm putting my money on the "acceptable" wording...)

I think it varies from person to person. I know several people with around a 20 mcat who were asked to retake it and got into other schools. There are also some individuals who scored under a 20 and got in. I don't really know what they look for and what their requirement is when asking people to retake it.

I'm going to take mine at the end of January, do you guys think applying mid February is "too late" ??

One month to find your scores.

Why are you waiting so long? You've got about two months to study for August date, and like you said, a 24-26 will suffice for your GPA.

All in all, is feb too late? Probably not, but it will put you at a disadvantage.

Take AAMC practice test 3, it's free. This will give you a baseline of how much you really need to study.
