If I want to accumulate shadowing hours for med school, is it acceptable to get some of those hours from my own doctor? It'd probably be easier to reach him than other doctors. Or would adcoms look at this unfavorably?

Lots of people shadow their physicians, it's a great place to start :)

My primary care doctor actually suggested that I shadow him upon me telling him that I'm in premed and looking for shadowing experiences, etc. So I can't imagine that it would be unfavorable to do so.

Absolutely no problem. Go for it. Maybe he/she can refer you on to a medical colleague in another specialty, too, if you like.
