Hey guys,

Please pardon my ignorance, I was wondering if any one can tell me what exactly is a CAQ in Geriatrics. I know the possibility of doing a 1 year fellowship in Geriatrics exists after doing a 3 year FP residency, but just wondering if CAQ is any differant from that. Also, not to sound too shallow but if anyone knows how much a FP Geriatrician can expect to make, I know the job market is pretty hot for Geriatricins and will be for the next 2-3 decades. If you can also tell me how difficult it is to get into a Geriatrics fellowship vs getting the CAQ I'd appreciate it.

a CAQ is the closest an FP can get to subspecializing. CAQs exist in three areas for FPs - Geri, Sports Med and Adolescent Medicine. After completing residency and passing FP boards, you take an accredited fellowship and then sit for the CAQ boards. There may be many geri fellowships, but not all are accredited to have you sit for CAQ boards. With a CAQ, you can bill as a subspecialist so it can be profitable...though I don't have exact numbers for you.

You can go to www.aafp.org and look for the residency and fellowship directory to find programs.

I don't know how much money you make, but just remember you will be making mostly Medicare dollars. With the government being your sole revenue source, remember also that your revenue will change based on politics.

i received CAQ in Geriatrics by passing the exam. you may have to do fellowship now, I don't know-this was about 8 yr ago.
